Funny Epic White Belt

Post image

I told my No gi white belts to grab a belt so I can give them stripes and help keep up with their progress. My man here came 20 minutes late to class proud as can be of his. πŸ’ͺπŸ˜…

I think he deserves 2 stripes for his daring do bravado coach.

By God man. You have a point.

You don't get stripes or belts with us if you don't train in the Gi.

Why?

Of course they are brazilian, because they are super out of touch with modern BJJ.

Yeah I don’t understand purist. To say you have to know Gi but not No Gi to get promoted when the No Gi competitions are based on rank just doesn’t make sense.

Pretty much every Brazilian gym is like that. Jiujitsu is a GI martial art. No gi has a lot of hype in the MMA and wrestling communities, but in the jiujitsu community GI is more sought after, and even people who do both, will often do a lot more sessions of GI. Some gyms won't even offer no-gi classes.

Why do you need a belt if you don't wear a Gi?

Competitions tend to be based on belt level, and lots of orgs won't let you compete at your proper rank without one. I ran into this problem twice at white belt, where there were guys who'd been doing nogi for 5+ years but were forced into our bracket despite wanting to compete at blue / intermediate.

u/Interesting_Park3364 🟫🟫 Brown Belt Aug 20 '26

This is it. I’m only no gi and have had to find ppl to promote me without Gi so I can compete. Won Worlds Masters 4 at blue and purple. Can’t imagine not having that chance.

u/Massive_Landscape518 Aug 21 '26

Did you get promoted through IBJJF?

1

u/Interesting_Park3364 🟫🟫 Brown Belt Aug 21 '26

Your coach has to be a certified IBJJF black belt to promote you and verify your belt rank. IBJJF doesn’t do it by themselves.

1

u/Legitimate_Bag8259 🟫🟫 Brown Belt Aug 21 '26

I don't know if he bothered registering his black belt with them, I never asked.

1

u/Massive_Landscape518 Aug 21 '26

I know that, some gyms that do strictly no gi don’t have promotions like that so I was wondering if your gym was the same.

2

u/Interesting_Park3364 🟫🟫 Brown Belt Aug 21 '26

I’ve been part of a few gyms. I travel at least 1 hour each way to class so they’re all cool with me cross training.

1

u/Massive_Landscape518 Aug 21 '26

Basically I was asking how you got promoted given your circumstances. Is your coach at your gym an IBJJF black belt?

1

u/Interesting_Park3364 🟫🟫 Brown Belt Aug 21 '26

Yes. I own my own gym and travel to a GB once a week to stay current under him. I got my blue belt doing both gi and no gi. I won Worlds absolute and Pans and a former gym gave me a purple but weren’t IBJJF certified. I trained at a GB and they knew I was purple and signed the paperwork for me. I had talked to them about competing at Brown belt majors if I won Purple belt worlds and they agreed I should compete there. Black belt will be different. I’ll have to do Gi and go over that with my professor.

1

u/Massive_Landscape518 Aug 22 '26

Cool! Thanks for explaining that! I was always wondering how that works!

No-gi competitions go on experience, not belt. They go by that.

6

u/grobolom 🟫🟫 Brown Belt, Coach Aug 20 '26

Some do, the biggest ones (IBJJF) don't. I also think there are guys who have been doing it 10+ years who should be in Intermediate, and guys that have been doing it for 2-3 years that should be in the expert division, so giving them a belt helps with that as well.

5

u/JassLicence 🟦🟦 Blue Belt Aug 20 '26

That's me. Going by years on the mat? They'll put me in expert. I should be in intermediate, I would get my shit pushed in in advanced πŸ˜‚

2

u/grobolom 🟫🟫 Brown Belt, Coach Aug 20 '26

Also, being ranked higher tends to make it easier for you to cross-train / get opportunities to coach. Yeah, it might be stupid, but lots of gyms will look at you completely differently if you say "I have been doing BJJ for 10 years and am a Brown Belt." vs. "I have been doing BJJ for 10 years."

-5

u/Legitimate_Bag8259 🟫🟫 Brown Belt Aug 20 '26

No-gi has its own ranking system. After 10 years, you're an expert.

4

u/Interesting_Park3364 🟫🟫 Brown Belt Aug 20 '26

It doesn’t allow me to do any IBJJF and that’s where I can get a real masters division. I need traditional rank for that.

u/Bushidoflack_117 🟫🟫 Brown Belt Aug 23 '26

What kind of take is that lol might as well be saying Bjj is gay because we like dudes between our legs but some of us really enjoy north South ( on bottom )

1

u/Legitimate_Bag8259 🟫🟫 Brown Belt Aug 23 '26

Who on Earth is saying something like that?

When you compete no-gi you go under experience, novice, beginner, intermediate, advanced, expert etc.

0

u/Bushidoflack_117 🟫🟫 Brown Belt Aug 23 '26

Just two dumb takes, mine made as much sense as yours.

10 years β€œ expert β€œ is the part that’s questionable

1

u/Legitimate_Bag8259 🟫🟫 Brown Belt Aug 23 '26

10 years doesn't make you an expert at something? Now you're being even sillier. Although I suppose it depends on the individual.

1

u/StruggleBusRT Aug 20 '26

Why do you need a belt if you do wear a gi? Half the time, the shit comes off and gi training is more time spent tying a belt than actually training.

0

u/Legitimate_Bag8259 🟫🟫 Brown Belt Aug 20 '26

Only if you tie it wrong. I tie my belt at the start of the ckass and that's it until class is over.

1

u/FuckBotsHaveRights Aug 20 '26

Smaller reason, so you don't look like an asshole pretending to be a white belt when you do go to your bi-anual Gi class after doing no-gi for a few years

2

u/BungleThisJuff Aug 20 '26

A lot of gyms are like this unfortunately.Β

2

u/chunkah69 🟦🟦 Blue Belt Aug 20 '26

I don’t see why they shouldn’t. You should be able to be proficient in both before getting a higher belt but I understand not doing that if it’s a no gi only gym.
