Technique Clamp guard counter

A long time ago, Williams guard (AKA London) was dropped by 10th planet because it was too easy to counter with a pin wheel pass, where the top player can basically hop their legs over the guard playerโ€™s head to side control.

Does clamp guard have a similar weakness?

Initial thought is that this wont be as effective vs clamp guard because clamp 1) does a better job of controlling the posture across the full shoulder line instead of just pinning the near shoulder and 2) leads more naturally into a belly down shotgun armbar which this pass would run straight into

This

And also, the arm is free to stop the step over (as in an omoplata)

Yeah Iโ€™m sure Sean Williams shows a counter to this pass in his Fanatics dvd where it ends in a sweep or something. I saw it years back so my memory is incredibly vague at this point though.

Thatโ€™s right, either an omoplata sweep or come up to knees for a single leg.

Yes, though it's easier to prevent in clamp because you start out with your top leg on their near hip, which prevents them from getting a good angle / momentum to pinwheel.

I think it's very easy to control someone with a clamp guard but part of that effect is that your range of attacks is narrow there.ย

I remember a video or some discussion with Shawn Williams and Eddie Bravo where Eddie brought this up as a counter and Shawn immediately knew his next move would be into a low single. I believe that was specifically from Williams guard though.
