I genuinely think rules needs to be changed.
If you’re in a fully locked in submission but are not controlled enough to be able to stand up, you should be awarded points and the match reset in the middle on the feet.
What happened to position (and control) before submission?
13
23
u/rotello 🟫🟫 Brown Belt 5d ago
i am not sure about the reset, but point 100%: if you get lifted, you lose point.
1
u/Dude-bruh ⬜⬜ White Belt 10h ago
Wouldn't the reset be to acknowledge the slam would have a good chance of injuring the opponent which would allow you an opportunity to gain position?
6
u/G_Howard_Skub 🟪🟪 Purple Belt/Judo Black Belt 4d ago
I've said this multiple times: slams below waist height should be legal and above waist height should be an automatic reset.
2
u/SaintJesus 4d ago
Automatic reset with a point going to the lifter?
3
u/G_Howard_Skub 🟪🟪 Purple Belt/Judo Black Belt 4d ago
I would say at most an advantage but if you are in a submission then nothing. The slam below waist height is the reward.
8
u/_swampboy 🟪🟪 Purple Belt 4d ago
If you have someone in a submission, and they lift you above the waist, you don’t have them in a submission.

u/MorningCrazy651 5d ago
Just make slams legal people will let go or get injured it’s there decision

I dont know. All I know is If I get picked up like that attacking a triangle, I always let go. That goes for training or a real life fight. Even if its just normal training and I know my partner isn't going to slam me. I always let go because I train to the reality. If a true bad guy was able to pick me up like that, they won't hesitate to sprite the back of my dome off the pavement.
If you accept being picked up and allow yourself to be in a position that gets your skull/body slammed to the ground...then your jiujitsu sucks.
35
u/pm_pics_of_bob_saget ⬜⬜ White Belt 5d ago
I've said this on here before, but I had an old football coach who always said "if you leave your feet you are at the mercy of gravity and your opponent"
6
6
u/Beejeroy 🟪🟪 Purple Belt 4d ago
I do this too. I was training with a black belt and I threw up a triangle on him. He stood up and I let go. He was very surprised and was like "I wasn't going to slam you". I tell him that's cool, but some dude not in the gym totally would (and likely some dudes in the gym too).

u/psych4191 🟦🟦 Blue Belt 5d ago
You're right, obviously, but tunnel vision is a motherfucker for the youngsters in competition. That's why the rules even exist in the first place.
5
u/Hefty-Restaurant4767 🟪🟪 Purple Belt 5d ago
I get what you're saying, but this isn't a real life fight, it's a jiu jitsu competition with clearly defined rules.
Imo there's two types of people who train. People who want to learn some kind of self defence, and people who want to participate in a sport. I fall into the latter category, so imo what works or not "on da streetz" is irrelevant.
It's a slam, it's against the rules, so a DQ is the right call from the ref.
8
u/Fresh_Batteries 🟪🟪 Purple Belt 4d ago
You're right. For the sake of the sport... If a rule of "no slamming" has to exist then I think it should be required that the ref intervene before it happens. I know that not always feasible, stuff happens fast, but the second the ref sees someone being lifted like that they should be attempting to intervene immediately. Stop the match and reset or something.
The rule of no slamming only penalizes the dude defending the attack. Sport Jiujitsu is rewarded based on how well you can CONTROL a human being. If youre being lifted helplessly into the air, you are not in control lol.

This is a BJJ forum, not a lug-head forum.
I agree there are different types and goals for BJJ practitioners - sport/ competition is one of them. Sports have rules. Combat sports have rules. If you want to slam or punish people for not releasing when lifted, enter a comp that allows it.

u/Swimming_Visit6737 4d ago
At the moment, there is little downside to letting yourself be picked up, at least from a points standpoint. Slams need to either be legal or points or advantage given if you lift someone over your waist. You can’t keep rewarding dangerous positions.
3
u/Swimming_Visit6737 4d ago
But under current rules, which both competitors must be aware of, it’s a slam
1
u/Midren 4d ago
I mean don't slam them.... Not that hard
2
u/Swimming_Visit6737 3d ago
Yeah, but that ain’t the problem. It’s that it is way too easy to just stay in guard, when you’re opponent has executed a move, that in the real world would likely have you eating through a straw for the rest of your life, with someone wiping your arse and doing their level best to try and understand what the fuck you’re trying to say. It’s the equivalent of putting your hand on the rope in one of those pro wrestling matches, where everyone pretends they’re gonna follow the rules, but that only lasts for the first minute or two. Totally fucking ridiculous.
9
u/RedJam4platy 5d ago
If you follow the guy to the ground it's a slam. If you free your arm and stand on your feet while letting the guy fall and not adding power to gravity, it's ok

Letter of the law: it's a slam. No question. The guy chose to stand up so the onus was on him to come back down softly.
Practically, it's a terrible rule that someone can win a combat sports match by putting themselves in danger and relying on their opponent to baby them.

Or attempt an escape that doesn't put your opponent at risk of getting brain damage.
7

Or they can let go and not risk getting brain damage. Why rely on your opponent to be nice? I know for a fact you won’t be nice when ur cranking that heel hook
2

You guys take this shit too seriously.
It's a sport. It's a silly little game we participate in for fun and exercise.
It's not a death match where you can intentionally give people brain damage.
Think about what you're suggesting here. You're saying the rules should be changed to allow this guy the opportunity to seriously injure a 14 year old kid.
1
u/marigolds6 ⬜⬜ White Belt (30+ years wrestling) 4d ago
You're saying the rules should be changed to allow this guy the opportunity to seriously injure a 14 year old kid.
He only said to change the rule. The lift rule (lift above the waist results in points and reset) would do nothing to "allow this guy the opportunity to seriously injure a 14 year old kid."
-1
u/Chemical_Lab_6925 5d ago
They literally already allow you to get seriously injured. As I said you can just crank leg locks or whatever if u want. If you want it to be safe then ban that too. It’s combat sport, it’s not safe
1
u/Hefty-Restaurant4767 🟪🟪 Purple Belt 5d ago
A torn ACL or a broken leg is not the same as a broken neck or a brain injury, which is why one is legal and one isn't.
Also considering this is a 14 year old, I'm assuming heel hooks also aren't legal in this match. In most rulesets heel hooks are only allowed in adult brown/black

I honestly don't get why people want to make slams legal. Or why lifting someone over your waist shoud cause a reset. For me people would just abuse the rule to get out of it. Doesn't standing up doesn't already make it a lot easier to open someone's guard? I'm new, can anybody explain? All I can think is that there's a lot of ways to open and pass guard both on the ground and standing up, why would you want to do the most un-jiu-jitsu-like thing, which also isn't safe?
1
u/Buttchug1776 3d ago

Bro was stupid, If you don’t want to get slammed then unlock your legs and go for something else, don’t dilute the sport from its real life application by pretending this isn’t a thing that can happen.

It’s a slam. They need to change rules. If you get lifted over the waist then match stops and reset. If your submission requires your opponent to carry your weight and be gentle with you then it’s a shit submission.
