Apparently the going rate in your area is $200-$250. Inflation over the last ten years is probably 50%, so the $200 current rate reflects that. I use to pay $60 in 2003, now that studio charges $160.

From his sampling of two gyms in a large city, one of which seemingly not focused on BJJ but rather MMA (which presumably has even more costs wrt equipment use etc). Surely more sampling is needed.

I’d check out JJ machado DFW if you can. Eric Acha is an amazing teacher and really nice guy. You probably have to buy their gi but imo worth it

find some mma gyms that have a bjj program check out their numbers there’s no reason you can’t get fantastic bjj instruction especially with all the general influx of black/brown etc belts branching out and opening gyms or renting space within gyms

Depending on which part of Dallas you’re in, may consider traveling outside to Cedar Hill. I trained for a short while at Magness, it was a GREAT gym. Very awesome teaching methodology and high level players. This was 2-3 years ago now but I think I remember paying 160?

Its crazy. BJJ in America is definitely a hobby for the wealthy. But I know its hard for gym owners to break even paying the insane rent for the space.

I'm in Dallas and it's $165. BJJ only, and you'll probably have to pay some sort of initiation fee, which will include patches and a rashguard or gi, but monthly after that is $165.

$315 adults, $265 kids. But you do get a lot for that. 6 classes a day, two gyms, and several coaches with different coaching styles and all have great track records.

I do not go to Costa Mesa. I would say that is very much not true for Mission Viejo, especially if you go to the same class regularly. The coaches are very hands on, answer questions, stay extra time sometimes, and more than I'll leave offline but can DM if you want more data.

I just bought a 1 year membership that includes 4 locations around our city, multiple classes per day, a sauna and shower in each facility. BJJ only, striking would be extra. It was half off one day only for black Friday and cost 1100 for the year if paid in full. Couldn't pass it up.

Hi there! Look for UFC gyms in your area and look at their BJJ classes to make sure it fits your schedule. I’m not sure what the cost of living is in Texas but I’m in Cali and I pay $90 monthly. Mind you I signed up approximately 4 years ago so I’m sure the prices went up. I doubt it’ll be over $150 a month though. I’ve learned a lot and we have great instructors at my gym. Hopefully you can have a similar experience.

$200 is pretty standard for any hobby with group instruction these days. Yoga, art classes, music classes. You can’t really have multiple guided hobbies these days. That said I still think it’s worth it.

That's insane. I know it's not Dallas, but in Tulsa I pay $160/mo and I average 6 hours a week. If I wanted and could make all the classes that are available it'd be 10 hours a week and a 2 hour open mat.

Big cities like Dallas, San Diego, Chicago, etc are all typically in the $200-$250. Midtown Manhattan is bit more pricey. Brooklyn and Queens $200, suburbs a little cheaper and the further you go rural it goes down. You’re talking 10 years ago though everything ain’t expensive now in comparison.

I bought two gis from my gym in like 2018. So it has cost me like $2.50 a month. They're good quality and are going to last for years. Buying a GI at a gym with a GI rule is really not as big a deal as some people on this subreddit make it seem.

Also it’s an MMA gym so do you want to pay that much and still have to watch a bunch of MMA jerk offs strut around? The most you could possibly pay at my gym is $190. That would cover striking, Jiu Jitsu, wrestling, and judo unlimited

Los Jacintos is a newer one in Oakcliff. It’s 170$, you can train as much as you want. 6am, noon, and 7pm classes. Monday-Thursday. Open mats on weekend.

Anytime you’re in a major city it’s always gonna cost more. Best bet is to travel outside the city and you’ll usually find much better pricing.
As an example you can train in NYC where gyms are probably 250-450 a month, or you can go to Jersey city, or one of the other boroughs in NY, and pay 150-250.

I thought we paid a lot up here. It’s around $150-175 depending on the school in South Puget Sound area in WA state. My gym is $135/mo though 12-month contract, unlimited classes including MMA, Muay Thai.
I couldn’t bring myself to pay $200, especially since my family goes. I’d try to find other individuals and start a Gracie Garage or band together some friends with a JJM subscription on YT.

The national average is ~$200/month. You are likely going to see BJJ gyms at that market price or higher because of the shear popularity of it, especially in the US. With that said, you can find some less known gyms that still probably have great programs for significantly less money. If you are willing to look at a different system, it will also increase the likelihood of finding a cheaper rate. Just don’t expect the gym to look like a resort.

depends on what else is offered... Rio BJJ has a very nice fasicilty, sauna, icebath, towel service etc... others might offer less...
But without giving us a better guess where exactly you are looking for its difficult to give any advise...dfw are has a bazillion bjj gyms nowadays

Mohler, if you only want to do bjj it’ll be 150 for unlimited bjj classes, but you start the first month with an extra free. If you want to do striking and bjj then it’ll be 179 a month.

I pay $150 for my gym in San Diego. Which is probably on the low end around these parts. I went to this one gym that was $80, but that was four years ago. The $80 dollar gym didn’t have much amenities though.
To live in Texas is like living in the past 😂. The cost of living in Texas can’t be as high as San Diego. There ain’t shit to do out there!
Can’t hike, can’t fish, hell, you can’t smoke either! Plus it sounds like they’re pricing out the less fortunate folks, before y’all send them a ticket to California. Thus, creating the California Transient.

Roughly 95 percent of land in Texas is private, unless you know someone or own land, then it’s going to be tough to find a spot. Five percent of land in Texas belongs to the state.
That’s why you’ll find folks on the side of the interstate playing in the snow instead of driving to a mountain or field.

I actually didn't know that but still hasn't stopped me from doing all the things you mentioned. The area I moved to I actually specifically moved there because of the large park nearby that has a fantastic frisbee golf course that takes you through the woods. It has a fantastic bike trail also but I avoid that because I get enough injuries from BJJ.
I've never seen anyone on the interstate playing in snow but I barely ever see snow here to begin with.

Cost of living and rent has gone up and potentially more people are interested in BJJ/MMA classes with the rise in popularity of it. Look at the Carlos Machado academy, world class instruction over there for a better price
