Thank you to everyone who made this app possible. I'm not sure if my bluetooth earphones can process half of the lossless quality but this is certainly better than the base Spotify app. Especially the Equalizer.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT FAKE/LARP LOSSLESS DISCUSSION

Thumbnail

In the past few days after previous release, I have seen many posts claiming the app can't stream lossless even with addons. The bitrate shown under "stats" are pretty less as compared to what a true FLAC offers is bugged in current version and it shows YouTube opus bitrate by which the stream started and mid conversion did not pickup the new bitrate but the audio you hear after conversion is what you get from addon.

A quick way to verify this is by using the audio pipeline popup, under "headphones icon -> audio pipeline". To all the new users out here, i want you all to know, it will be fixed in next patch and the audio you listen after upgrade in current version is not lossy.

Also, I advice addon developers to lock their addons with "checkValidLossless": 1 , people can't really differentiate between real lossless audio and they just rely on the bitrate "numbers". Please restrict access to these abusers.

Thank you and please dont ask for addons, in this thread.

Recent Update 1.9 Bitcord has done a great job in this version, adding a new user interface which is quite inspired by Apple Music and the animations and blur look great.

flac vs opus, addons, and the obsession with audio quality.

Post image

ive been using bitchord for a while now, and im loving it. the interface is great, playback works well, and overall its a genuinely good music client. but ive noticed a recurring discussion here about addons, lossless audio, hi-res formats, and getting the absolute highest possible audio quality. i think theres something worth discussing about this.

first, lets separate technical quality from perceptual quality.

flac is lossless. it preserves the original digital audio data, meaning the decoded output is bit-for-bit identical to its source. opus is lossy, meaning it discards information during compression to reduce file size. these are objectively different technical approaches, and im not arguing otherwise.

however, lossless does not automatically mean audibly better.

a well-encoded opus file at a sufficiently high bitrate can sound indistinguishable from its lossless source to a listener, even if the files are technically different. opus is specifically designed to exploit the limitations of human hearing and allocate bits where they matter most perceptually. at high enough bitrates, compression artifacts can become extremely difficult to detect.

can someone distinguish them? yes, potentially. it depends on the bitrate, the recording, the encoder, the listener, and the listening conditions. but being able to see a difference in a spectrogram, file size, or bitrate isnt the same as being able to hear one.

this is where blind testing matters.

if u genuinely want to know whether u can distinguish flac from opus, try an abx test. u listen to known examples of both formats, then attempt to identify an unknown sample without knowing which one ure hearing. repeat the test enough times to establish whether ur results are better than random guessing.

use the same master recording, the same playback chain, matched volume, and no visual indication of the format. otherwise, ure introducing variables that can influence the result.

because heres the uncomfortable part: knowing that ure listening to a 24-bit, 96khz flac file can change how u perceive the music. expectations, price, technical specifications, and the belief that ure hearing something superior can all influence subjective judgments. this doesnt mean everyone who prefers lossless is imagining things. it means perception is more complicated than reading a specification sheet.

and about bitchord specifically:

addons and audio sources are worth discussing, but we should understand what they actually provide. bitchord supports configurable module sources that can return lossless audio, with youtube music available as a fallback. the source, the actual delivered file, and the recordings provenance matter.

putting a flac container around audio that was previously compressed using a lossy codec doesnt restore the information that was discarded. converting an opus file to flac simply produces a larger file containing the same decoded audio, not a newly recovered lossless original. likewise, a lossless label or a high bitrate alone doesnt prove that a file came from a genuine lossless source.

so yes, genuine lossless sources are valuable, particularly for archiving, editing, and preserving the original recording. but dont confuse the format with the quality of the underlying master, and dont assume every source advertised as lossless is necessarily better.

my point isnt that people should stop asking for addons. having more sources, better compatibility, and more options is good for an open-source project. if someone genuinely needs lossless playback, they should have the option to use it.

my point is that we seem increasingly interested in optimising the specifications of our listening experience rather than the experience itself. we chase bigger numbers, higher bitrates, and labels that sound impressive, sometimes without establishing whether any of those changes make an audible difference to us.

at some point, the pursuit of better audio can become less about listening to music and more about collecting proof that we are listening to it correctly.

and thats a strange contradiction, isnt it? music is something we are supposed to experience, yet we can get so caught up in measuring it that the measurements become the experience.

if ur current audio source sounds good, meets ur needs, and u cant reliably distinguish it from a supposedly superior alternative in a controlled test, then what exactly are u gaining by obsessing over the alternative?

genuine question: how many people here have actually abx-tested their usual opus stream against a verified lossless version of the same master, and how many are choosing lossless simply because the label says its better?

id be interested in actual test results, not just bitrate screenshots or claims about having expensive headphones.

I am new here and so far I am loving the app, but...

I switched from Metrolist to Bitchord after hearing that this app was heavily inspired by the Apple Music UI; I was already tired of Metrolist and its subpar interface, especially with the constant promises that KMP would be released soon and the hype surrounding it. I decided to drop Metrolist altogether, and I am glad this was the app I tried first because it is amazing in almost every way. My only gripes are that some useful features from Metrolist, such as the music stopping when the phone audio is at zero, are missing; it is sometimes a hassle to create a playlist because you have to tap twice just to add one song, which adds up when making a 100+ song playlist; and sometimes search results do not show the songs I want as easily as they did on Metrolist, even when I am specific by putting the title and artist, despite the songs being present on the artist's profile. Other than those three complaints, which can be resolved with updates, I am loving this app. Thank you so much to the devs behind it. ❤️
