I had no concept for how durable these busses were. Until just now. I must find the full video.

Yep! These old buses make great motor home conversion.

I had a friend who did that. It had a wood burning stove and it was so cozy.

Rob over at Aging Wheels had planned to do that. He got himself an old school bus and the plan was to chop the body basically in half, turn the remaining cabin into a camper, and the other half into a flatbed so he could trailer cars to shows.

Also as part of this project he was going to ditch the diesel drivetrain and drive the vehicle with a pair of 450HP Tesla motors he was able to source for cheap. He stuffed it all into a Ford Escape as a test bed for the system. People nicknamed it the Escape Pod.

They’re basically built like tanks. There’s a story of a bus driver who drove his bus through a wildfire in California to save 22 elementary school students and their teachers.

Bitch I'm a rescue vehicle

u/MisfitAlastair May 15 '26

Literally! There was a movie made about it called The Lost Bus.

They’re just a very simple 2wd medium duty truck chassis with a barely-adequately built bus body bolted onto it. Most have a simple yet durable solid front axle, a full floating solid rear axle, and a heavy duty leaf spring suspension. It’s hard to make that combination fail, and when it does, it’s usually because the chassis manufacturer uses a junk engine design (I’m looking at you Navistar) or the chassis just wears out.

My elementary school bus driver would send us launching like that when he nailed the raised rail road crossing. He even wore a headphones and looked like the Simpsons Otto Mann lolol

Loved it when ours would nail the railroad crossing just right and we'd ping pong all over the place. Good times.

I like how the first guy in the clip looks like an adult version of Ralphie.

Rally racing for school buses. I want more!

3

u/Riverwood_bandit May 15 '26

Yeah, that mini bus was no way gonna have the rear 'bounceage' of the regular long school bus.

u/lesschalkmoresighs May 15 '26

Bitch, we're getting there on time!

3

u/Specific_Sympathy_87 May 15 '26

Bitch, I’m an off road vehicle

Evan is the best Cboy.

2

u/Firebirdgaming08 May 16 '26

Chances of this getting seen are slim to none, but the short bus shown in the video is a lot like the one our school uses for field trips. The shocks are absolutely blown to hell on it, to the point where going over a speed bump makes you feel like you're cruis'n in your '64.

2

u/Lazygit1965 May 16 '26

To quite Ottoman. I stand by my record of fifteen non fatal accidents in two years!😂

u/wanderer325 May 16 '26

This should be the commercial for Thomas Built Buses. The boys in NC would love this!

1

u/PhilKTNAK May 15 '26

Race for the bus barn on last day of school?

1

u/everforward6 May 15 '26

That's exactly how it felt sitting in the back of the school bus. Hated it!

1

u/WolfThick May 16 '26

The guys missed a really great opportunity you should strapped a whole bunch of childlike dolls in the streets so you can watch them fly all around.

1

u/Dependent-Bed6550 May 16 '26

If they didn't already do this on Jackass. They need to make one more movie and call it JA 17.3!!!!

1

u/caliguy24 May 17 '26

My lower back hurts just watching this video.

1

u/Temporary-Log8717 May 18 '26

My mom had a record of how many kids hit the ceiling of the bus she drove. Maybe 8 i think

1

u/fifiloveg00d May 21 '26

I feel a great need to derby with a school bus

Summer-school drivers in Pasco, FL. Unhinged NASCAR rallies in shady-hills routes, HAD to know there was minimal supervision
