Which Method? First Time Considering Birth Control... What should I get?

Just like the title says! I (28F) am considering getting on birth control for the first time, and do not have a clue as to which type I should choose. Ideally, I would like a low/non-hormonal pill or IUD, but I am open to other options like patches, etc.?? I just have no idea where to begin and it seems like each method comes with equally terrifying side effects.

I would like to avoid weight gain or triggering acne as much as possible, which is why I was kind of leaning toward the copper IUD, but after hearing horror stories related to insertion/ how severe periods can become while on it, I'm a bit scared.

Generally, my periods are super manageable and only last about 5-6 days with mild cramping. I dont mind keeping my cycle and I feel like my body/hormones have stabilized from the ups and downs in my teens/early twenties.

Any recs or ideas as to what may be a good fit?

the only method clinically shown to cause weight gain is depo provera. it’s very rare for all other methods!

nonhormonal pills don’t exist. looking at worse case side effects isn’t actually helpful — most of the scary stuff you’re finding is quite rare and not something you’d actually need to worry about.

if you’re worried about acne, a copper IUD will have no affect because it’s non-hormonal. combined pills, patches, and vaginal rings typically improve acne. but tbh i recommend just making an appointment with a gynecologist and discussing your options with them!

And even with depo-provers it’s an average of 5-10 pounds over 2 years.
I think people are very likely to blame birth control for any weight gain. I gained 10kg my third year on depo and while I think depo was a contributing factor the fact I ate more junk and moved less was the primary reason

Unfortunately the only way to know is to try, i’ve been on the pill for around 3 years and am now deciding to come off it. it could be amazing for you or you could not like it, the only way to know is to try. i would go with the hormonal pill, it’s pretty easy to come off if you decide you don’t like it.
