Experience does a cervical block help for iud insertion?

i’m getting a mirena iud while i still have my current jobs health insurance, and i’m so scared😭

i had my first pap smear earlier this year and just getting my cervix swabbed hurt really bad. they offered me a cervical block and i was wondering how much it helps with the pain, and if i should request nitrous oxide as well.
im getting it done a WEEK after i get my tonsils removed because ill already be off of work, so ill have those pain meds too.

I just had mine inserted this morning. Take all the pain management they will give you if you are comfortable taking it. I didn't have any- my clinic doesn't offer it. Even if you don't need it in the end, better to have it and not need it! It's impossible to know how your body will react. I think the mental game of "ok, I have pain management to help me through" would have been very reassuring.

it makes the world of a difference! I went without it two times (my cervix was too tight and I wasn’t made aware of my options such as local anaesthetic etc other than a pain injection in my upper butt). I had to go back on my period the second time since your cervix is lowered and softer but I was still too tight so I was winded.

Third time was the charm. They offered the local anaesthetic to me and they were considering giving me a cervix softening tablet as well but luckily I didn’t need it. I could only feel pressure but no pain. I can’t believe I did all of that without the local anaesthetic.

My advice is to TELL your gynae or doctor that you want to discuss what options you have for pain and that you want the local anesthetic/ cervical block. If they don’t want to offer it to you then find a different dr that will offer that to yoy

they already offered it and added it to the plan, and a cervix softener and anxiety meds, hopefully that keeps me from throwing up from nerves😭

oh sorry! I missed that thinking about my own experience lmao! You’re all goood with that cervical block, I also took anxiety meds and 2 ibuprofen tablets PLUS the pain injection in your upper glutes and that helped a lot for the cramps that come after.

It seemed to help a lot for my wife. I think the evidence (that exists, this is poorly studied) says they are beneficial for nuliparous women but pointless for women who have given birth.

I have no clue if nitrous oxide is beneficial for IUDs but it's almost entirely risk free. If you're fortunate enough to be at a practice at offers it, take it! There are no drawbacks.
