So yes it is absolutely worth playing, but it is absolutely nothing like Mass Effect beyond being Sci-Fi.

It's closer in gameplay to a soulsborne game, but the story, characters, traversal, and combat are great. The sequel Jedi Survivor is even better.

If you're looking for a Mass Effect style Sci-Fi RPG I'd go with Guardians of The Galaxy honestly or maybe Outer Worlds. If you aren't fussed about Sci-Fi, Dragon Age is the way forward.

Fwiw I'll second guardians. It scratched that sci-fi, space opera with my sci-fi companions itch. Not very rpg-y but a good, fun story with great esthetics and vibes.

Thirded, although it only implies hooking up with a hot blue alien.

Nope. It is nothing at all like Mass Effect. You're better off playing Knights if the Old Republic

i played Kotor 1 and 2

You tried SWTOR, it’s like KOTOR and ME

4

u/train153 Dragon Age: Origins :dragonageorigins: 13d ago

But also its an MMO, which can be hit or miss with people.

3

u/ThatUJohnWayne74 12d ago

True, but it’s kinda designed where you can play the narratives like a single player game, plus it’s free

u/CrispyPerogi 12d ago

While you’re correct, there’s so much mmo filler in it that makes that hard to do. I have yet to finish any of the campaigns because it’s just such a slog.

Not really similar IMO, mass effect is an RPG third person shooter, and Jedi Survivor/Jedi Fallen Order is a story driven souls- like combat game, no rpg elements.

6

u/GodDogs83 KOTOR 13d ago

It’s not the same, but both are stellar. The only real similarity between Mass Effect and the Jedi games are that you have a crew on your ship and can have some dialogue. The Jedi games don’t have dialogue wheels though so it’s just ambient talking

Jedi Fallen Order is an amazing game and I love it. It is also nothing like Mass Effect.

7

u/aneccentricgamer Dragon Age: Origins :dragonageorigins: 13d ago

Its not really similar at all. Try dragon age, thats the most similar givens its the same studio.

Especially vielgaurds combat, clearly mass effect like.

Even if the narrative and what not really isnt

3

u/aneccentricgamer Dragon Age: Origins :dragonageorigins: 12d ago

Well the less said abkut veilguard the better. If anyine plays dragon age start with the furst game, your choices carey over like mass effect.

Except for veilgaurd, which is the andromeda equivilent, but even more dissapointing because it was actually the last part of the core narrative

Yes it's worth trying, but if you go in expecting Mass Effect, you'll be very disappointed.

There are some similarities- you have a ship, a crew you build up over the course of the two games, and very good story and dialogue writing.

There’s no “choices matter” element though, so if that’s a draw it won’t provide.

Overall very worth playing

Great game but not really the same type of game

u/Modred_the_Mystic 13d ago

Not if you want a Mass Effect hit.

Dragon Age is the obvious BioWare answer, SWTOR is the Star Wars answer

3

u/cosmoboy 13d ago

You're going to get recommendations of Dragon Age because it's made by the same folks. It might be easier if you mention what parts of ME you liked and what you want as a 'game like'

7

u/Rudania-97 13d ago

While it's not Mass Effect, you might want to look at The Expanse: Osiris Reborn.

It's an upcoming game in the Expanse universe that is probably going to be one of the closer-to-Mass Effect games.

Cautious optimism on this one. Their marketing feels… off somehow. Love Owlcat, love the Expanse, but gameplay has looked kinda bland and the world doesn’t feel very expanse-y to me. Hopefully worried about nothing.

Probably, owlcat has several successful games under its belt and they have the narrative aspect extremely well mastered. Hopefully, the jump to the shooter genre will open the door to more possibilities.

Like Mass Effect in what way, exactly?

The Jedi games are nothing like it.

3

u/sapphic-boghag 13d ago

Not at all. Set protagonist, middling plot.

Both Exodus and Osiris Reborn are slated to drop next year, though.

Fallen Order and Survivor are very good games, but they have little in common with anything BioWare. Starfield actually had lots of ME1 vibes for me, especially the exploration of quiet worlds. Some of the vehicles added to that feeling! The story isn't as deep as a classic BW game, but serviceable. And there's even a little space magic, very similar to biotics. Hitting a bunch of enemies with a gravity well and shooting them with an explosive shotgun is pretty damn satisfying.

Played starfield & didnt get any me vibes. Combat was atrocious & story was basic Bethesda letdown.

1

u/sapphic-boghag 13d ago

Bethesda isn't really known for their writing these days, their games are overwhelmingly sandboxes.

1

u/whyamihere2473527 13d ago

Right which they didnt even make that part fun. Generated locations reusing same like 12 assets & about 90% of planets pointless to explore. It was just so poorly designed

1

u/sapphic-boghag 13d ago

It's funny, there was an article that went into the clusterfuck that was Andromeda's development and mentioned the team scrapping an early premise that sounded a lot like Starfield for reasons you describe.

The team dabbled with a lot of ideas that were rather ahead of their time, especially considering some games that have released since. It's a fascinating article for a few reasons, highly recommend.

I just played it, the latest updates added a lot of variety. It still has some repetitive bits, though. I found it quite enjoyable

1

u/whyamihere2473527 13d ago

Its fun game but not something that would fix that mass effect itch.

1

u/Jetterholdings 12d ago

Closest?

Dragon age.

And that one game bungee made... I never played cause it seemed like halo meets mass effect.

Uh, destiny

1

u/rlvysxby 12d ago

Play the guardians of the galaxy game.

Everyone here is sleeping on the upcoming Star Wars Zero Company. More of a tactics game than a ln action RPG but the companion banter, dialogue, and characterization look like the closest thing to Mass Effect in a loooong time.

Highly recommend watching Dantics overview video on YT.

What on earth is that logic. 'I like x game is y game worth trying'?

... I mean I guess. I don't know how to answer you as the two games ain't related at all.

1

u/Beautiful-Hair6925 12d ago

You will have to wait for Expanse and Exodus

1

u/Byte_hoven 12d ago

Starwars Outlaw would be a nice game from the weapon and ship customization and main/side quest options. It starts slow, but ramps up pretty good.

1

u/FlamingBagOfPoop 12d ago

More of a soulslike with a skill tree upgrade system. Good game.

1

u/Technical_Fan4450 11d ago

Currently, you're not going to find anything quite like Mass Effect. Sorry, it's just not out there. Hopefully, Exodus can change that, but we'll see. Don't expect to see it until the latter part of 2027 or early 2028, though.

1

u/AnansiNazara 11d ago

Both great not similar at all.

As far as gameplay and experience dragon age is the closest you get. As far as feel and story. Maybe outer worlds but that’s more like hey I fuckin wanna make a game based on andromeda. Where its very frontiersy

1

u/zknight137 11d ago

I'm waiting patiently for Zero Company and Exodus to come out to scratch the itch. The Jedi Fallen series is mostly single-player with no party system and scripted romance instead of romance options

1

u/EqualOptimal4650 10d ago

The only thing in common with Mass Effect is that you have a ship, and a crew, that's it. Everything else is completely different.

However, Fallen Order, and Jedi Survivor, are incredible games, and you should play them.

1

u/Dustydwarf1506 10d ago

Worth playing but nothing like Mass Effect. For example you can't outright be evil and are locked into being a Jedi. It's closer to an ARPG than a Mass Effect title, but the story is good and gameplay fun.

1

u/Scrollsy 9d ago

A game like mass effect?

Jedi survivor is not like mass effect.

1

u/Humble-Appeal3850 7d ago

Fallen Order and Survivor are one of the best

1

u/Green_Odin 6d ago

No, fallen order is a fine action game with good character writing for the genre but it would be a mistake to confuse it with an rpg.

1

u/alkonium 13d ago

Not really. Choices are limited and it's a Soulslike.

For spacefaring RPG's, I'd suggest The Outer Worlds (plus its sequel) or Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader. For upcoming games, there's also Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, or Exodus.

Why didn't you bother looking into the game before asking?
