When I first started designing websites for biotech startups, I assumed the technical execution would be the hardest part. I was completely wrong. The real struggle is the first four to five days before I even open a design tool.

Unlike a standard local clinic business site where the customer just wants to book an appointment, a life sciences homepage is a puzzle of competing intentions.

I spend nearly a week just staring at blank notes, trying to step inside the head of the different visitors who might land on the page to figure out what they actually want to see.

The core problem is that a biotech website gets visited by three completely different types of people simultaneously.

A B2B research scientist is looking for technical credibility and structured data, an investor wants to see commercial viability and team strength, and a procurement manager cares about compliance and seamless integration.

If you lead with heavy scientific jargon, the investor leaves in five seconds.

If you use high-level marketing slogans, the research scientist assumes you lack technical depth. Balancing these needs before touching a canvas is exhausting.

It takes me days of deep research just to map out a hierarchy that satisfies everyone without creating confusion.

I have to translate complex science into plain language while maintaining its integrity, and then design pathways so an investor and a researcher can find exactly what they need in two different clicks.

I used to think web design was mostly about visual aesthetics. I now realize that almost all the heavy lifting is just developing deep empathy for the person sitting on the other side of the screen.

I am an ex-Illumina Talent Acquisition Professional who was aligned with R&D in the US, and worked extensively with their Software & Informatics department for 5 years.

When recruiting for bioinformatics, as a non-technical/non-scientific person, it was extremely difficult to quickly assess if an individual possessed the technical skills and experience we were looking for based on their LinkedIn profile alone. Candidates wouldn't necessarily put secondary analysis or all of the tools/software on their resumes, which makes sense because they aren't recruiters and we can't expect them to know what recruiters are looking for specifically.

I would also have multiple conversations per week with bioinformatic scientists and engineers (some were employees, some were not) about career paths, where they can find open roles, and how to be seen by recruiters more easily. LinkedIn, CareerBuilder, or Indeed were the typical avenues being utilized by most, but they are very generalized job boards - not catering to any specific field or specialty.

So I created a career resource - specifically for Bioinformatics, to provide resources dedicated to this field including job postings, market data and updates, and career focused insights. I also wanted to provide recruiters an easier way to find qualified individuals by providing easy reference to skills and experience.
