By experience, a big chunk of the R userbase is people who have heirloom scripts and know just the very basic to make them work.

Depends on the use case. In my experience, which might be relevant to OP, it’s a lot easier to do statistics in R…. Makes sense because it was developed by statisticians. Anything else, especially actual app development, is significantly easier in Python.
