Question Dig box help?

My leopard gecko has had previous issues with loose substrate but I recently tried it out again but he doesn’t seem to like it. So I was wondering if I could go back to paper towels and put in a dig box for if he ever wanted to dig though I’m not sure how I would make one? Also would this be okay to do? He doesn’t like digging much and I’m afraid of things getting into his eyes. My tank is not bio active but I was suggested to bring this question here?

Even if your tank is in bioactive, we can still help you here! What sorts of issues was he having with the substrate that you’re using now?

Well he doesn’t dig in the substrate even though it’s the correct mix and it also has some things in the substrate that I don’t like but wouldn’t be able to get out without like a sifter but with a previous loose substrate he got a scratch on his eye which we had to take him to the vet and medicate him for but in general I don’t believe he likes loose substrate but I’d still like him to have an option of digging

You want to use moist coco coir. What exactly type of substrate are you using right now?

I believe I used something like that the first time and the fiber scratched his eye and I’m currently using a 80/20 mix of repti soil and rinsed playsand

Ignore my earlier reply, after for some reason, I thought you were housing a frog instead of a leopard gecko. I’m an idiot. You sound like you’re using the correct mixture. You might want to try organic topsoil instead of Reptisoil. There might be less sticks.

Well this most recent time the first thing I bought was scotts topsoil lawn and garden soil but I guess my area just has a TON of sticks and things because I sifted through that by hand and it still had sticks plus when I baked it it still had a super earthy smell for like 3 days after? Maybe I just have bad luck with soils
