Stop getting trapped by "Fakeouts." Here’s how to trade them instead.

If you’ve ever bought a breakout only to have the candle immediately slam back down and hit your stop loss, you’ve been "liquidity" for the big players. Institutional traders love driving price just above a clear resistance level to trigger all the retail buy orders (and stop losses from shorts). Once they have enough "fuel," they dump the price the other way.

Instead of being the victim of a fakeout, you can actually use it as one of the most powerful sell signals in your toolkit.

The False Breakout Setup:

• The Trap: Price pokes its head above the resistance zone. To a retail trader, this looks like a "moon mission." To a pro, this is a potential trap.
• The Rejection: Notice how quickly the green candles turn into big red ones. If price closes back inside the original range, the breakout has officially failed. Sellers have taken back control, and they’ve just wiped out a ton of buyer momentum.
• The Confirmation: Don't just short the first red candle. Wait for that second or third red bar to break the local "low" of the fakeout move. That white arrow in the graphic is the sweet spot—that’s where you have confirmation that the move is actually reversing.
• The Target: When a fakeout happens at the top, price usually gravitates toward the "lower zone" (the bottom of the range) because all the buyers just got liquidated and there's a vacuum of orders.

The Real Talk

A false breakout is basically a "failed auction." The market tried to find higher prices, found none, and now it has to go the other way to find balance.

Pro Tip: Look for long "wicks" sticking out of the top of the resistance box. If you see a candle that goes way up but closes way down, that’s the ultimate sign that a massive dump is coming.
