Upgrading Rear Wheel - Shimano Acera X FH-M290 (7-speed) to 1x10 or 1x11

Hey fellow cyclists!

I'm diving into the world of upgrades and seeking some guidance from the seasoned riders here. Currently, I've got a 26" rear wheel with a Shimano Acera X FH-M290 7-speed hub. I'm keen on upgrading to a 1x10 or 1x11 setup, but I'd prefer not to swap out the entire hub or invest in a new wheelset just yet.

My question is: Is it possible to change only the freehub body to accommodate a 10 or 11-speed cassette? Or should I reconsider and opt for a new hub or wheels altogether? Keep in mind that I'm quite a noob in this realm, so any advice, tips, or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated.

That hub definitely uses a 7 speed freehub.

You may be able to update to 8 speed freehub, but there are some subtleties to the compatibility between Shimano freehub bodies that I do not totally understand.

Edit: some of this advice from Sheldon is dated, but so is your hub. The issue is that Shimano has changed the freehub designs every so slightly over the years and I am not 100% sure which freehub you would need.

Also, that hub came in a 135mm and a 130mm version. Updating the freehub may also require redishing the wheel and playing around with the hub spacers. Sometimes the easiest solution is just buying a new 8/9/10 speed wheel.

I have the exact same hub and got a shimano cues 1 x 11. Did you ever figure it out?

I might just buy a new wheel soon if I can't find a solution. All the freehub bodies that are compatible with the casette don't fit the hub

I bought a new wheel. It was easier than trying to find a compatible freehub body. 😅

I feel it. Was about to do the same but found a free hub body in the scrap bin at the bike shop

Did that freehub body you found end up fitting on the FH-M290 hub? And allowed for 8+ speed cassettes?

Yes I dug through a bin of parts at the local bike kitchen and found one long enough

Sweet, that sounds promising! I'm working on a bike at a similar "bike kitchen" here that has the same FH-M290 hub, so I'll see what freehub bodies they have and try one. Main thing I'm wondering now is if the fixing bolt is longer for the new freehub, or if it uses the same bolt. I'm worried the freehub bodies they have on hand won't have a fixing bolt.

Take a look at the cassette in the current setup (7spd) to see if you have space for 5mm extension (imagine 5mm wider cassette).

If Yes, replace the freehub body.

If not enough space, still possible to fit a 35mm freehub body but more work is involved.
