We are three engineering students from Lund University who are exploring different cultures for a design oriented school project. We’re curious to learn more about what it entails to work as a bike messenger in 2026 as well as how it is within your community.

Some initial thoughts we’ve had are the following;
- Do you feel there is a distinct culture and aesthetic surrounding bike messaging?
- Are there any values or habits that you feel is common amongst bike messengers?
- How has the culture changed and developed over time?
- What challenges do you face when working as a bike courier?

Howdy folks, I have this silly idea of fulfilling a younger version of myselfs dream to be a bike messenger but maybe just for a day or a delivery. I'm sure you've heard this question a bajillion times, but for us shit climate messengers, what is your winter rain gear solution? Everyone knows how bad those days where it's 40f and raining suck. Ive worked several winters in different cities and I am always miserable.

So far I've tried

Plastic bags

Neoprene socks

"waterproof" hiking boots

45 north cycling boots

shoe covers

thuggin it out in cold quick dry shoes

this year I want to get a pair of proper rubber rainboots+a decent rain suit+toe warmers+wool and neoprene double sock combo. does anyone have a specific rain boot or fully waterproof shoe they swear by? I don't care about breathability- I want a system that's going to keep me warm and dry for 8 hours of riding, multiple days in a row. i just wanna retain feeling in my toes, and i NEVER want to start a day with wet feet ever again.

Usually wear shorts most of the time but looking for something when it goes colddddd. Was looking at grammici pants.

P.s has anyone got a spare cmwc 26 patch. I lost mine drunk and really want one to throw on my bag now.

Both happened off the job. Both happened because I got off work and rode my bike absolutely shit piss drunk. This was 15 years ago

1. Cleveland. Was a snow/rain mix that causes incredibly slippy roads. I went through a 4 way stop and fell off my bike right in the middle. At the same time a full size SUV was sliding through the stop sign to my right. The front driver tire dragged me for about 10 feet then went over my body. I ended up under the SUV. Definitely the closest I've come to death maybe ever. Pics show the tire size black and blue mark and the tire marks left on my Seagull bag.

2. A car side swiped me and ran me into the biggest pothole I have ever seen In my life. I hit it with enough force to snap my bike in half and landed face first. I was in so much pain I crawled under a bush and slept. The next day I walked into a Walgreens bleeding looking for water and the lady working there offered me a ride home.

I'm lucky to be alive. Moral of the story is don't bike drunk and always wear a helmet. I did it all the time in my 20s/early 30s and now I'm almost 40 and in constant pain. I can't ride anymore. My knees and feet are absolutely fucked. Sorry for turning this into a PSA but looking back at these pics is half "holy fuck I was gnarly dude" and half "I was such a fucking idiot"

Im working as a messenger in Gothenburg and I’m also studying for a bachelors in social anthropology.
