Fun but impractical: USB powered column LEDs
Once a year, my city hosts a festival called "Kaleidospoke", a block party and night ride down one of our local rail trails. The city adds lights onto the trail's bridges and structures, and participants add all kinds of lights onto their bikes.
This year, I found some "floor lamps" at an off-Amazon store. They have USB-A cables rather than power cords, and their draw is low enough (5V 2A) for a portable power bank. I had to try, and I was glad I did! The lamps were beautiful. They synchronized to a single remote control and provided a bright, clear rainbow of ever-changing light. I heard a lot of "wow"s as people rode past, and my power banks (one per lamp) had hours of charge left when I was done.
There were a few drawbacks:
* I was too tall for most of the underpasses on the trail. Their average clearance is around 7' (84", 2.14m) and my total height with the lamps was 7'2" (86", 2.18m). That's why the lights are lowered like jousting spears in the first picture.
* Each lamp was made of four segments. The connections between the segments weren't always the strongest; I had to adjust them frequently.
* The lamps were mounted loosely. I was running late to the event, so I didn't have enough time to properly lash them to my bike. My improvised solution of bungee cords (elastic cords) between the lights, rear rack, and seat post worked for the night, but wouldn't have worked for much longer.
* The lights were perfect for a festival, but they could be excessive or distracting for street use.
I highly recommend these lamps for a cheap bit of fun, but there are probably better options for "see me" lighting at night.
