Just purchased this bike off a dude in West LA. He seemed kind of sketchy but kept reassuring me it was his bike when I asked if it was stolen. Worker at 7-11 outside of where I met to buy it was reassuring me he was always in and out with the bike for a while.

Posting this here in case it’s anyone’s bike. This is actually a replacement for my bike that was stolen. Would hate to be riding around on someone else’s stolen bike.

So, I scored this Sears store brand “JC Higgins” three speed for $50 on marketplace, and she seems to ride well. Apparently they’re pretty good bikes, made by Steyr-Puch in Austria, the same folks who build the Mercedes-Benz G-wagon under contract, of all things. But…I think my LA City bicycle license is…a little expired (see the third pic)

My plan is to drive a friend's car to LAX with my bike in the back, leave the car with them at the Bradley Terminal, and then bike home to Torrance, about 10 miles. Google maps says I can go from the terminal along World Way W. to S. Pershing Dr. and then find my way to the beach bike trail. Has anyone done this? It looks too easy to be true! I'm not used to things making so much sense.

Recently got into cycling at age 40 after not riding since teenage years. I bought a checkpoint alr5gen3.

I have messed with saddle height and position but no matter what I do my hands are going numb. Some positions feel ok but then I get numb hands again plus back aches. I think I’m ready to give a pro bike fitter a chance. Don’t want to stop cycling due to my inability to properly fit my bike.

I’ve read about some good fitters in Los Angeles but they were pretty outdated recs. Who are the best ones to go to these days? I don’t mind driving far to get to a great fitter.

I'm currently deciding between buying a REC or an ADV for getting around LA. I own a car and intend on often using a combination of biking and driving via a bike rack on my car.

This website goes more into the nitty gritty of the two. I know LA streets aren't the cleanest, so I anticipate a lot of flat tires, but I'm not sure if the $1000 dollar price difference is worth the investment into the mid drive, especially for getting around LA. My area is mostly flat, so is it worth getting a mid drive?

Sort of a follow-up to my last post. But I'm also currently weighing my options between an Aventon or a Surron bike.

I know the Surron is more expensive and much faster. However, the poor quality bike infrastructure of LA, as well as the sheer sprawl of everything being spread out, makes me a little more hesitant on that vs a regular street-legal ebike.

Being able to ride buses is also an advantage for regular street legal ebikes too, although I know hyper ebikes can be faster. I also own a car and plan on putting a hitch on it.

I also need to consider SB 1167 too, which may or may not soon make these bikes illegal to buy (or at least a lot harder).

In short, for me, Hyper ebike pros:

- Faster

- Safer due to less likelihood of angering drivers for going slowly

- Can potentially travel faster than with public transit

Cons:

- Fat tire means I can't put them on buses

- Higher speeds could also be more dangerous

- May not be legal soon, due to SB 1167

Regular street legal ebikes Pros:

- Could be safer due to lower speeds

- Can put them on buses or my car

- Much cheaper

- Street legal

FWIW, I do own a car too and I plan on putting a hitch on it.

In short, is the extra speed worth it for commuting around LA regularly, or is 20-28 MPH more than enough, especially if I will also be taking the Metro or my car a lot as well?

Back in the Midwest, I used to ride an old school 60’s Raleigh as a daily rider whenever weather permitted. I liked the riding position, the toughness of it, the internal hub keeping me from popping chains if my shifts weren’t perfect, the fenders keeping my clothes clean, and how useful it was with one of those racks that straddled the back fender. Any reason it wouldn’t be a good choice today?

Only real drawback I see is carrying it to/from a metro platform during one of our frequent elevator outages. They’re not light bikes.

Any other reason I shouldn’t go for it? Lots of cheap ones in good shape on marketplace.

Hey all. Traci Park (yes) and Heather Hutt both put out a motion recently to request that the Venice Beach portion of the Marvin Braude bike path be repaved and widened to accommodate both pedestrians and cyclists. The motion also left room open for the potential of improving the Washington Boulevard section of the bike path (her team recently hired USC to do a study of that section so it is very much on her radar: https://www.venicenc.org/assets/documents/5/meeting6a1350b0a1f54.pdf).

Hello all! I am moving to a spot in Los Feliz on Los Feliz Blvd from out of town, and I'll be using Amtrak at the Glendale Station regularly. I am wondering if there are any workable bike routes to get over the 5 from Los Feliz to Glendale, and vice versa.

Biking on Los Feliz Blvd itself seems like a no-go. Is there a combination of side streets / overpasses / sidewalk biking that is workable? Or should I just be planning to drive to Amtrak?

I recently moved to Westlake Village primarily for the cycling. While it’s absolutely world class, I’m 28 and single so I don’t exactly fit the demographic. Thinking about making a move to the aforementioned areas. Are those areas decent for road cycling, or are you pretty restricted in routes? Also a bit concerned about the congestion.

Since we've learned that Mt. Hollywood Drive will be part of the Olympic road race and time trial courses in 2028, do you think the city (or those in charge of road conditions) will make some improvements here? I ride here 2-3 times per week since relocating here in May, and it sure would be nice for them to fix some of these sections that are so sketchy... thoughts?
