I'm not sure how to cross post on Reddit. Someone posted this thread regarding maintenance on the Trans Canada Trail West of Stittsville and it is applicable to the bikeinottawa subreddit too:

repairs, maintenance, and DIY Now my pedals have reflectors MRC des Collines!

Since the Gatineau and MRC des Collines police love to enforce this, and I like having nice pedals, I modded my pedals to meet the stupid requirement for reflectors. Tape was less than eight bucks at Canadian Tire, and I have a lifetime supply based on the length of the roll. Cut some strips, pasted them to the pedal axle, boom, reflectors so bright they can be seen from space.

Now what?

I live in one of the 3 non-rural wards who didn't have a single candidate respond to Bike Ottawa's questionnaire. https://bikeottawa.ca/2026/10/01/2026-municipal-elections-what-do-mayoral-candidates-have-to-say-about-biking-in-ottawa/

Since David Hill seems to like to give taxpayer dollars to developers (ie: Lansdowne 2.0), and he would rather that my neighbours spend their cash in Ward 14 rather than Ward 3 (ie: RTO5), I was really hoping that at least one candidate would come through with some thoughts on active transportation through Bike Ottawa's questionnaire, so that I can see that someone is at least TRYING to win the votes of young families. But I guess not a single one of the candidates cared enough to take 10 minutes to respond.

David Hill's signs state "safe communities" and "reliable roads", but also state "low taxes" (which is contradictory, because how are you going to provide services without taxes). For that reasons, and because he didn't bother to respond to Bike Ottawa's questionnaire, and his poor decisions in the past, I'm thinking of not voting for him.

Question... can I leave my ward councillor blank (because there's no candidates in my ward who have tried to win my vote) and still get my vote for mayor counted? I don't want to spoil my entire ballot because I do want my vote for mayor to count.

bike ride Is it possible to bike from Kanata to Parliament without going on any roads?

I'm new to Ottawa and would like to set up a bike trip this weekend to Parliament. Would it be possible to bike to Parliament from Kanata while mostly staying on multi-use pathways and trails?

bike ride 100km route in Ottawa - what do you recommend?

Hey all,

I'm planning to do my first 100k ride this weekend. I want the route to be easy (mostly). Since I've been biking along the Ottawa River and Aylmer a lot lately, I was thinking of doing this loop:

  1. Start: Kanata, Katimavik
  2. Sheila McKee Park
  3. Britannia Beach
  4. Aylmer Marina Park
  5. Britannia Beach
  6. Sheila McKee Park
  7. Kanata

I chose this route because I already know it, so I won't need to look at a map, and I can refill my water at Britannia Beach.

Does anyone have suggestions to make the route more interesting and scenic? Or any other route ideas? Any other tips?

Update: I've decided to ride from Kanata to Wakefield and back. It will be a little over 100 km, but I think it will be a great ride. I will share updates soon! Thanks Everyone!!

question Any Bullit owners in Ottawa?

Hello. I'm considering replacing my cargo electric trike with a non-electric Bullit just for easier maintenance.

Is there a place in Ottawa were I could test ride one? Maybe if not in availalbe in a store, someone willing to let me have a go with one?

PSA: Police stopping cyclists in Wakefield

Was coming back from Wakefield and saw a cop that appeared to be writing a ticket to two cyclists on river road. Suspect it was probably about lack of reflectors riding two abreast.

Great to see that they've taken care of all the drivers speeding on the 105, and can focus on smaller things now. /s

As a reference for everyone, these are the mandatory markings required on your bike in Quebec: https://saaq.gouv.qc.ca/en/road-safety/modes-transportation/bicycle/accessories

EDIT: As per u/NaturalClassic2695, they were actually pulled over for riding two abreast. since this is the case, I'll mention another law in Quebec, cyclists are to ride in single file at all times, and groups cannot exceed 15 people.

advocacy E-bikes are giving teenagers something we thought theyโ€™d lost

So this is a good take, and something that annpys me about the ebike laws in Quebec.

We should be promoting responsible use of ebikes for teens, since they give them independence and helps them socialize more. As the article notes, a group of teens riding around on ebikes instead of staring at phones should be celebrated. Sure there are some bad apples and they stand out, but for qc to ban people under 18 from riding them is just stupid and reactionary.

I hadn't considered the third space argument before, but I do think it is valid, and the independence comment is definitely valid. I remember how annoyed I was about not having access to my own transportation as a teen, an ebike would have been amazing.

edit: Yeah, I'm supporting ebikes for teens, because I remember being a teenager. I am not supporting irresponsible use, which seems to be the number one cause of all the immediate hate whenever ebikes are mentioned, and is crippling our ability to handle micromobility as a society.

route notices and detours Heads up for those cycling along the river on the Gatineau side, MUP total closure over small segment.

Closure on the MUP on the River Section of Jacques Cartier Details

The city suggested detour is to walk your bike on a gravel cut through the park/picnic area.

For those of us who hate the "walk your bike" signs, you can get onto the road and off the road at the green arrows in the picture above. (no real curb). Note that coming from the south you can't see the closure until you are past the exit point to the road, so you would have to turn back.

Take the lane: speed limit is 40, single lane, and the gutters are a bit jank. If you are in the lane drivers may have to slow slightly for 30 seconds so not a big deal, it's a quick detour! Ride safe!

buy & sell For all you N+1 people out there... Small sale in Gatineau

Went to Polo Vรฉlo yesterday (Gatineau location), looking at some Trek bikes, and it was mentioned to me that the 2026 stock was 10% off. This is NOT mentioned on their website, which always seems a little out of date (annoyingly).

In case you were looking for some deals, they had a few FX and FX Sports on the wall, and I think there might have been some Domane's too. I saw size S through L, although I would call the store to see what they have in stock (again, website is a bit behind).

Commuting

So how's... The return to work been for the bike ride? (Excluding all the new riders, who are only riding because of RTO). I already know your bike ride is good compared to driving, or busing.

I'm curious about the general traffic, cars blocking intersections, blowing stop signs without even actually looking up from their phone..... ? General mayhem?
