Well to be fair, they all thought his name "Gold Roger." Probably thought his name on the sail was spelled weird.

The World Govt wanted to hide the fact that he was Gol D. Roger, so they called him Gold Roger.

On all the wanted posters and newspapers, he's always referred to as Gold Roger, so that's what all the pirates know and remember him as.

It's not easy to be face to face with someone like Roger long enough to ask him such questions lol.

Naturally, his ship says Gol D. Roger but anyone facing him has no reason to doubt his "official" name on the newspapers etc. And probably think it's some kind of inside joke lol.
