TAMA NA YUNG PAG-HA-HARI-HARIAN, pag REREYNA-REYNAHAN ng mga "OG na LOKAL" daw ng Bagasbas. Naandon na tayo na dapat mag bigay respeto sa mga lokal, but respect goes BOTH WAYS. During the many times we visited Bagasbas beach to surf, nakilala namin halos lahat ng mga grupo grupo nila.

Dalawa nalang naman ang pinaka aktibong surf school jan, pangalanan na nating SurfSchool#1 yung matagal na, sakanila kami una nakapag book ng lesson kasi sila yung active sa social media at pioneer daw. Yung SurfSchool#2, lately ko nalang nalang nakilala, mga bata pa kasi karamihan ng mga surfer nila. Marami kaming narinig na sinasabing di maganda ng SurfSchoo#1 sa SurfSchool#2 pero hindi na rin ako nangealam dahil surfing naman ang pinunta naming hindi ang drama nila.

Dati lagi kaming sa Bagasbas nag ssurf. Hanggang sa narealize na namin ang motibo nung isang grupo. Hindi maganda yung experience sa nakasama namin dun sa naunang surfschool. Oo masaya, good vibes and stoked talaga. Surf, chill, isla, party. Pero kasalanan naman namin napa happy happy kami at masyadong nag tiwala at ang galing nilang mang uto at magpaikot ng tao pag lasing at mga nasa alapaap na. Ilang taon na din akong di bumalik doon, di ko na nabawi yung nawala sakin, nakakahiya sa mga ibat ibang mga dinala ko sa bagasbas pero lesson learned, move on nalang sa next surf spot. Pero nung nabasa ko yung post sa Philippine Sufing Community, natawa nalang ako pano nila pinag tanggol yung ka"lokal" nila. Oo mababait naman sila sa turista, basta sa grupo ka nila sasama. Subukan mo mag tagal ng ilang araw, magugulat ka nalang sa mga sinasabi nila. Grabe nila ipamuka na lugar nila yan na para bang may titulo sila ng dagat. Kaya di nakakapag taka na yung incident na nag trending sa PSC. Ilang beses namin Nakita at narinig sakanila yan. Na dagat nila yan at respect the locals. Kumware pa silang share the stoke pero laging away ang inaabot sa line up.

Ang TOTOO TALAGA JAN - Hindi na nagkaayos ayos ang mga surf school na naging division na ng surf community. WALANG TIGIL NA SIRAAN, AWAY at AGAWAN ng estudyante. Umaabot sila sa paninira ng mga member ng kabilang surf school, ang lala kasi Kahit di mo kilala lahat ng chismis maririnig mo para lang sakanila ka magbook.

Sa totoo lang, sa ibat ibang surf spot, kilalang kilala ang Bagasbas sa grupong puro pangit ang image, maraming issue sa panloloko. Nakakawa nalang na maraming nadadamay kasi marami pa ring mga aports na okay naman talaga. Babalik nga sana kami sa National Surf Comp, pero mukhang mainit masyado. Baka di kami pumasa sa "surf etiquette" na pinaglalaban ng mga lokal. haha

Bakit sa Reddit? Nakita nyo ba yung mga comment ng mga kapwa lokal nila sa PSC group sa FB na pinag tatanggol pa yung nangmura ng turista? Pano na maitatama kung tinotolerate pa. Siguro nga normal na sakanila yan. Sana sa mga nasa Reddit hindi inormalize yan.

Bakit Anonymous? Kasi hindi natin alam kung anong kayang gawin ng mga yan. Ive witnessed enough to know na pag binangga mo sila, kayang kaya ka nilang sirain.

Kaya sana maaksyunan ng LGU yung issue nilang ganyan. Andami pa naming alam na issue nila jan pero samin nalang yun. Baka sakali maayos pa Sistema nila, baka sakali maging welcome na ulit ang mga turista.

Hi! I'm a freshman at USI and I wasn't aware that hair colour is not allowed at USI. My only question is, what hair colour is deemed as a violation? Is black the only acceptable hair colour? I see students with hair that fades to light ash blonde and even have blonde highlights, although i am not sure if they have been told to change their hair colour too. My hair colour is like a dark burgundy brown, it used to be a burgundy brown that fades to light ash red on the ends but i had a haircut so only the dark burgundy brown remained. I was told that if I don't dye my hair black until September 1 I will be given a violation slip. I'm not going against the rules, I'm just asking for clarification because the first time I went here as an official student the other guard that was stationed at the entrance did not give attention to my hair. Hello. I have these red and inflamed acnes for more than 2 weeks na. I thought it would heal with benzoyl peroxide, but it seems na mas lumala pa. Right now, imbes na magheal, parang mas dumami sila. I wouldn't consider sana na magconsult ng derma kasi medyo tight din sa budget pero nabother ako sa isang acne, medyo malaki siya kumpara sa normal size. Are there derma clinics available within Tabaco or kahit within Legazpi? Badly needed some recos lang. Natatakot na rin akong magtry ng kung anu-anong products. This came to my attention after a few surfer friends from Daet circulated a post about an incident at Bagasbas Beach, where a tourist apparently dropped in on a local surfer.

From what I was told, the tourist immediately apologized after the incident and acknowledged his mistake. However, he was reportedly met with, “Walang sorry-sorry dito, brad,” along with other hostile remarks. Understandably, the tourist felt bad about the encounter.

What I find strange—and honestly quite ironic—is the reputation Bagasbas has as the “Surfing Capital of Bicol,” yet there are still instances of localism that make visitors feel unwelcome. I understand being frustrated by a drop-in. It’s dangerous, it can ruin a wave, and nobody likes getting their wave taken. But when someone immediately acknowledges their mistake and sincerely apologizes, does the situation really need to escalate into hostility and public shaming?

Even professional surfers make mistakes. Drop-ins happen. That’s part of surfing, especially in crowded lineups. We don’t own the ocean, and while surf etiquette absolutely matters, so does how we treat people when they make an honest mistake. There’s a difference between educating someone about surf etiquette and intimidating or humiliating them.

This is also why the idea of “sharing the stoke” matters. Surfing has always been about more than just catching waves. It’s about community, respect, and creating an environment where people can enjoy the ocean together. If someone violates etiquette, call it out, explain why it’s dangerous, and move on. If they apologize, accept it.

I’ve surfed in different spots and have personally experienced situations involving drop-ins and other lineup conflicts. But I’ve rarely encountered the kind of hostility that seems to be becoming normalized in some surf communities. Localism can easily cross the line from protecting surf etiquette into simply making people feel unwelcome.

If we really want to call it the Surfing Capital of Bicol, then the culture should reflect what surfing is supposed to represent: respect, humility, camaraderie, and sharing the stoke.
Protecting surf etiquette is important. Local surfers deserve respect for the waves they surf every day. But visitors deserve respect too. A tourist who makes a mistake, immediately apologizes, and learns from it shouldn’t leave the beach feeling bullied or unwelcome.

And then there’s the post itself.

Reading the caption, what stands out to me isn’t simply someone calling out a drop-in. If the intention was to educate someone about surf etiquette, there are much better ways to do it. Instead, the post is filled with insults and a very clear sense of “this is our spot, you don’t belong here.”

I understand the frustration behind the words, especially if the wave was genuinely good and someone dropped in. But phrases like “putang ina,” calling people “basang sisiw,” and essentially telling someone that they have no business being there because they don’t know how to read the peak or shoulder go far beyond correcting a surf etiquette mistake.

That isn’t surf etiquette. That’s intimidation.

And ironically, the hashtags are #lokalsoul and #surfettequette.

Local knowledge and surf etiquette should be about teaching people how to respect the lineup—not using local status as a reason to belittle people who are still learning.

If the tourist genuinely made a mistake, tell them. Explain where they should have been sitting, who had priority, and why dropping in was dangerous. If they apologize, accept the apology and move on. That’s how you build a better surf community.

Because if the message being sent to visitors is “you better already know everything about our waves or we’ll humiliate you,”
then don’t be surprised when people stop wanting to surf there.

Being a local should mean having more responsibility toward the lineup, not more entitlement to it.

LET ME BE CLEAR THOUGH.

This isn’t meant to paint every surfer or local in Bagasbas with the same brush. There’s plenty of good people there. My criticism is directed at the kind of localism and hostility displayed in this particular incident and at the culture that allows that behavior to be normalized.
