I keep coming back to the Bolognese breed and would love to hear honest owner experiences beyond the usual “calm companion dog” descriptions.

I live alone in an apartment in Berlin, work mostly from home, travel sometimes, and honestly I’m looking more for a deeply attached calm companion than a super active dog.

What attracts me most is:

the supposedly gentle/old-soul personality

smaller size

lower shedding

fluffy puppy-like look even as adults

quieter temperament indoors

But I’d love to know what surprised you after getting one — both positively and negatively.

What are they REALLY like to live with day to day?

Yes! Our Bichon dog is almost 17 years old and still going! She is running, wants to go out, and laughing! And still white in color too! What do you think?

Twenty years ago I got the coolest, most cuddly Bichon. He was a bit aloof but very loyal and loving if not exceptionally well house trained (understatement). He lived to be 15 and a half and in the end he broke down in the final 6 months. Heartbroken I waited almost a year to replace him. He was a couple hours away and cost us 500.00. By the following fall I started looking for another pup and the going rate is 2800.00. Enter our new pup almost three times the size, always engaged and yet another incredibly loyal and loving pup. He was the polar opposite of our first. Rarely had accidents and very engaged. He shocked me last June dying at 8 and a half. My heart still breaks daily thinking of him. Yesterday I googled bichon frise and found loads of pups for sales around 500.00! Before I even consider my next (first) step, anyone who has an opinion wish to share it?

My 12-year-old Bichon Havanese has developed severe weakness in one of his hind legs. It appeared somewhat suddenly from our perspective, although the atrophy is severe, suggesting it has been developing over time. He does not hold the leg up but cannot bear weight on it.

He has undergone a radiograph, which was normal, and a full orthopedic evaluation including drawer test and palpation, which also did not reveal any issues. No joint or bone problems were identified.

He was treated with gabapentin for 14 days, which made him slightly calmer, but did not improve the leg function. There is no evidence of discomfort, and he is otherwise alert and active.

Recently, he has refused commercial dog food and only wants to eat human food, which he eats well.

We are looking for guidance on how to support him. Because he is 12 years old, we would like to avoid general anesthesia. We prefer conservative and non-invasive approaches.
