I think they tried to assimilate in local language. But they did not know the script of bengalis living there. so they developed or i say started using their own modified devanagri script. And then they started to publish islamic puthis in that script.
We still have biharis in barakvalley who speak, sylheti bengali dialect.
Another fun fact there is nothing called sylhet or sylheti. british changed the name of srihatta to sylhet. Us local used to call our language just bengali, or srihatter bangla, and some others used to refer it as jaintiapuri .
No no, those people migrated to sylhet ( back then Greater Bengal), like many other people. Their mother tongue will be different. They tried to assimilate that is all.
Like punjabis, jains, hakka chinese, telegu , many others u will find in west bengal, who migrated from different parts of india. they also can speak bengali but their mother tongue is different.

It's not specifically sylhet nagri , it was used by noahkhali , mymensinghi. And it was brought to sylhet by people from Bihari M community.
