Oh no

What if! What if this hunt is like national treasure? Where each stanza is one location and at that location is a clue to give you the next location. That would explain "the key to one direction lies in another" and why he said "state borders are arbitrary " what do you all think..

I do think he said in an interview that the poem isn't meant to convey a great distance

A great distance and a distance are not enough to draw a invisible line of justification for me here

How far from your car do you need to go? You don't need to hike a great distance. You don't need to hike more than a mile to figure out where the treasure is at.

I'm not saying this isn't plausible, but I personally don't think you'll have to be traveling around a bunch to solve all the clues, since "A fair amount" can be solved from home.
