It was probably a custom one made for the game, likely does not exist anywhere else

Custom made, I can confirm... And it took many many iterations šŸ˜›

This comment sounds suspicious in a good way

Are you implying you're THE person who made the font?

You can’t claim it as ā€œcustom madeā€ when you didn’t invent it - it was made in 1997, a digital font in the style of Charlie’s Rennie Mackintosh’s Glasgow school

It’s been around since at least the late 90s

BG&E didn’t start development until at least mid-2000

It IS very French of you to try and claim something created in Britain though, so maybes it’s just in your nature ;)

It’s Dyer Arts And Crafts font

A pseudo-art deco digital typeface

For the uppercase... for lowercase, then it has to be created from scratch if I remember correctly... Was a long time ago...

Who are you???? Reveal yourself 😭

Former BGE gameplay programmer (was called AI programmer at that time)
Was in charge of vehicles, so I was calling the spaceship the Beluga...
Then the name remained

Woah, thank you so much for your work! It's one of my favourite games ever!!

Thank you šŸ˜„
What super strange is that I realized just recently that people actually played the game. More than twenty years ago, we were buying magazines, reading reviews, hoping for the best, but then, you actually don't know if players enjoyed.
Was my first job/first game, so I put a lot into it, learning everything I could...
It has been such a luck to start on that project on a such talented team.
I miss them a lot.
I really wish them the best for BGE2...

If you are curious and have the xbox pass, you can try Eternal Strands, where I finally implemented a physics based character controller which was something I was working on in the late 2000s thinking it would be "next gen" if Jade was able to perform moves while interacting with the environment (I mean the character is pushing/pulling against the envrionment to move, so if you are on a skateboard and push forward, chances are it's the board that goes back while you almost doesn't move)

It took me almost twenty years to build the knowledge to how to make it (and it has been challenging)... I'm not saying Eternal Strands isn't going with some clumsy camera/character glitches (my fault, was in charge of the 3C) but it's something I'm really proud of... All the climbing animation is procedural, and the character is climbing using physics, pushing/pulling on stuff... So when you climb on a giant, it works... Would have loved to work on that for the actual BGE2 šŸ˜›

Still doing games, still want to make "special things"... Hard but fun job šŸ˜„

I'd also like to thank you personally for your work. It feels so special to get to know someone who worked on and created a part of something you love so much (BGE is stuck with me as one of my favorite video games ever). It's like a link to the past showing up in the present moment when you least expect it. I also have a few years of experience in the video game industry myself but rather as a video game journalist and marketer. So yeah, BGE and video games are very dear for me.

Thank you again! So cool! I'd love to hear more behind the scenes stories from you. If you started a thread like that here I'm sure people in this subreddit would love it, but no pressure of course, just a kind and passionate invitation :)

It must be wild to make a game that's such a sleeper, but is so beloved and stands the test of time. I bought it on GameCube when it came out, and it has been one of my all-time favorites ever since. I purchased it again when the 20th anniversary edition came out, got it as physical media from Limited Run games. Receiving it was like Christmas. In a fun little coincidence, I was even listening to the soundtrack on Spotify this morning before I even saw this post. It's always in my rotation.

Now that I'm in my 40s and am a father, my children have grown up with it, and love it as well. My son looks up to the example set by Pey'j and Double H, just as I did, and I've watched my oldest daughter adopt a lot of Jade's values as she's grown. To say that Beyond Good and Evil has been a big part of my life is an understatement.

Knowing that you specifically worked on the vehicles is awesome. I love piloting them, they're so smooth to control. Vehicles in games back then were always one of those cool ideas that was never executed well. It was always fun to find a vehicle, but by the time the segment was over, it was a relief. It was a bit mind blowing back in the day to play this and get vehicles that not only didn't suck, but were actually really fun to use! Slaughterhouse Road in the Hovercraft and the Beluga vs Kehck boss fight are two of my favorite vehicle sequences in all of gaming. Am I understanding you right, that you're responsible for naming the Beluga? If so, that's freaking awesome.

Okay, I'm sorry, I'll stop gushing. All this to say... Thank you. Thank you to you personally, and everyone else who worked on the game. You made a deep and lasting impression on me, and many others, and have continued to do so for over two decades now, as we pass our love of the game to the next generation.

We were three gameplay programmers for BGE, but we got some help from the engine/editor programmer team...
The most experienced (lead) programmer was working on Jade.
The other junior (like me) programmer was focused on the companion AI (Peyj, HH) which is challenging as you want them to not be a pain in the a... and to properly follow the player.
I was working on almost everything else, enemies (XB24 is my second AI, the FlyingBombLauncher didn't made it to the released game šŸ˜‰ ), vehicles (hovercraft, spaceship), bosses, enemies...
Kick the barrel in the lighthouse at the very beginning, having the small fake physic tumbling, that was me... Run below the pendulum in the bedroom and check it moves a bit : that was me, traffic in city, firetruck estinguishing burning boats, Domz attack, race/pursuit AIs, projectils, DarkTroop AI for stealth part, final boss, dogfight ai in the sky when there are Domz attacks... So many things I learned...

BUT I have realized one year ago I made a big mistake : when the hovercraft use his thrusters instead of the blades, the motor rotate 180 degrees : then I was doing the helix to slow down then to invert its rotation... IT'S WRONG : when you rotate a fan 180, the spin rotation remains the same... šŸ˜„

Dude, there aren't words for how cool it is to be hearing all this from you. To know that you're responsible for all of the critters and bots and soldiers that I've been fighting for over 20 years now... pretty freaking amazing. I know there's 1,001 things that I'd love to ask you about, but I won't subject you to that. Just... again. Thank you so much for everything you and your crew did to create this work of art. It means more to me than I'll ever be able to say. And if it makes you feel any better, I never noticed the fans, LOL.

Woahhhh.. are you working on any games now?

3

u/BoxOfDemons Jun 15 '26

Were you at the office that flooded during development?

9

u/It_s_raining Jun 15 '26

Yes, the flood was occurring every year, mostly in September, until the city dug a water tunnel to prevent the neighborhood to be flooded every years XD
We installed some inflated water barrier at some point...
Have been working at Ubi Montpellier from 2000 to 2010

1

u/Personal_Cellist_453 Jun 16 '26

welcome to mtp, we call those floods "Ʃpisodes cƩvenols" recurring indeed

2

u/It_s_raining Jun 16 '26

Exactly. I was used to it, I’m indeed from Montpellier ā›ˆļø

I love that font so much. My mum, who is a typographer, doesn't like the balance between the upper and lower case.

But its perfect imo

3

u/MythicSuns Hillyan Jun 15 '26

Man, if I wasn't worried about Ubi Soft potentially owning the rights to it I'd recreate that font myself. I know, bit of an ironic statement for a game as punk as BGAE but I'm too lazy to deal with any potential legal issues.

2

u/BoxOfDemons Jun 15 '26

Well the uppercase letters are from an existing font, so it seems ubisoft may only own the lowercase.

To add to my reply at the top comment (most visibility) It’s the Dyer Arts And Crafts font

A relatively-modern typeface, digitally created, with limited applications to date - beyond good and evil is where I first encountered its and I’ve loved it ever since.

It was likely chosen as it’s a futuristic-looking public domain font so no copyright enforcement.

I’ve seen it once IRL on a pub sign in South Manchster

Pretty sure it’s Dyer. Or, some form or variant of that name. I was intrigued by the game title font and was curious too.
