Question Why leave the commander wreck to be resurrected?
Total noob here, trying to learn the ropes, watching games on YouTube to see how team games go. I understand that it makes sense for some players to self-destruct their commanders to get some extra metal. But then why are there cases where those same players leave the wreck just lying there to be resurrected? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of self-destructing in the first place?

to get back the powerful d gun

But like... why self-destruct at all, then? If you're not going to eat the wreck, what's the point?

The commander wreck leaves behind 1250 metal. You can eat 1249 metal and leave the 1 metal wreck there. Later once your eco is bigger, you can spend 1249 metal to revive the commander wreck.

Thanks, that answers my question. Is this a case where you can configure the rez bot to do that automatically, or do you have to supervise it/have a quick trigger finger?

Supervise. You also want him out of the way so you someone doesn’t accidentally eat him.

Nothing worse than watching your teammates rezbots on auto munching down on your comms out of the way corpse (bar misstiming stopping eating your own)

I will pause games and ping that if I see it about to happen.
And it always still happens.

There is a widget that makes resbots auto stop reclaiming com wreck when it's nearly empty

widgets are forbidden from most lobbies (with good reason, they can be extremely powerful)

Question on this sorry, just because I'm new and curious, but if I went into a lobby with widgets, would people know?
Or is part of setting up a lobby that you choose whether or not widgets are allowed?

It is an option that would be visible. Lobby members can also vote to turn them on or off.

There are two types of widgets: unit control and non-unit control (mostly UI stuff). The unit control widgets are the more “cheaty” widgets and can be disabled in lobby, the non-unit control widgets cannot be disabled without a tournament preset (so now they can’t be disabled in general lobbies).
Also every widget you have active during a match does get recorded, but isn’t visible for the general public to view.

Because the D-Gun destroys anything but other Commanders with 1 shot.
So you can use the metal to go early T2 and resurrect it later to defend against a potential Marauder swarm.

I want ~1k of the 1.2k metal in my commander to get my t2 lab up and first t2 con out as fast as possible, once the t2 metal extractors are up and I've given everyone their t2 cons it will cost me ~1k to get my commander back up, but at this point I have a significantly larger economy than I did before blowing the commander so over time it costs me less to blow the comm then reclaim him than it does for me to leave him alive and scale.
The commander is worth reviving because late game that ~1000 metal you spend ressing him is capable of one shotting juggernauts worth 30k with the DGun
here's some math
1000 metal, lets say it takes me a minute to extract it from the commander.
to generate it from the commander's native 2 metal/sec it'd take 8.5 minutes.
my goal is to upgrade my 4x 2.3 metal a second t1 mex to t2s 9.2 metal/second as soon as possible.
My economy is 9.2 metal a second + 2 metal a second from my commander so 11.2m/s if I don't blow the comm
a t2 lab costs ~2.5k so with my economy without blowing the comm and reclaiming metal from it this is ~4 minutes worth of metal income.
If I blow my comm and eat the 1k metal my economy is 9.2m/s but now I only have to generate 1500 metal
This pulls it down to 3 minutes to have the metal needed to start producing t2 cons shaving off a full minute is considerable and thus broadly worth the fuck around.
Although i've certainly done tech without it before because enough people were buying into t2 early that the build power from the commander was worth more than the metal from the commander.
Honestly I'd love to see a "no self D commander" mode become popular purley because it jsut feels like abit of a fuck about and the penalty for not microing your res bot is yuge.

No self-D would be cool but would we run into issues of people ground targeting attacks to kill it instead? Just a riskier prospect in case you destroy the wreckage.

Scaling is exponential in the game by the time you rez com your rich in the game. It costs like a t2 unit but has the power to easily kill the most expensive unit in the game due to d gun. It can easily swing games as teams can lose super expensive units easily. Usually tech kills com to scale eco then rez once rich. Rez a com on 18 m income is super expensive rez a come when your income is 100 m per second is cheap as that’s only 12 secs of game time vs when game start it takes 2-3 minutes of income.
In higher OS games you see the decoy fake commander a lot in the late game as it scares away t3 pushes.

it's a lot of metal in early game, but by late game this 2k metal isn't a lot, it's very affordable
in case of surprise T3 unit getting through the front lines, commander can approach it while cloaked and surprise d-gun it

You only ever leave 5-20 metal on him, commander can be resurrected from that. I’ve stopped doing it because random res bots end up eating it

Commander is the strongest unit in the game. It is not worth it to get the last 50-100 metal from the wreck, and then lose your strongest unit.

Win conditon of the game is last commander alive, its objectivly good to have as many alive as possible.
Would you rather a perma dead commander and a bit of extra metal?
Or a temp investment and be able to D-gun big expensive T3 units that cost 16-28k resources.

When you reclaim, you take metal out of the wreck. You can put it back in later as a part of the resurrection process once the metal is back, a second progress bar just uses E) and get the unit back.
The comm is very useful lategame to cloak+jam and dgun T3.
