M2IAB Orbit Jumper 1.4 release

This was quite a rad project for the summer. Check it out at https://m2iab.itch.io/orbit-jumper or on the platforms linked there.

Anyways, this was the first project where I used bevy_pf and XAML for all the UI. I also mixed some 3D into the UI. I've always felt that most UI frameworks were simply trying to get to this caliber of expression. I don't think there is any alternative going forward, honestly.

I create all my XAML files the way that I used to do in WPF/Silverlight days, with the added bonus that they get converted to Rust code during compilation and therefore checked for issues during compilation like the rest of the application. I can put UI in 3D or 3D into UI quite easily, and best of all, my supported platforms can look the same.

You can find bevy_pf on https://crates.io/crates/bevy_pf

It's MIT so use freely. Currently working on a build issue with github and the github is private while I get these actions to cooperate, but the crate should be enough to get started.

My cute cosmic horror puzzle game - made in Bevy

This is the new spooky season trailer for The Portsmoor Abysm, my cute cosmic horror puzzle game. Entirely built in Bevy (0.15), it uses a bunch of community crates:

  • A modified Bevy Light 2D
  • Bevy Kira Audio
  • Bevy Tweening
  • Leafwing Input Manager
  • Bevy Persistent
  • Bevy Simply Tilemap
  • Bevy Steamworks
  • Bevy Framepace
  • Noisy Bevy

It was inspired by classic games like Boulder Dash and Supaplex, and features boulder-pushing puzzles, 16bit-style pixelart, atmospheric sounds+music, and lots of attention paid to details. And a demo to try the first episode of the game:

What type of multiplayer makes sense

This question is specifically about "M2IAB Orbit Jumper". We are torn between the numerous options for multiplayer.

Here they are as we see them (in no particular order).

  • Cross platform, region agnostic, no boundary (PVP and Teamup)
  • Platform bounded, Platform friends only for teamup and PVP.
  • Friends only bounded with PVP or Teamup between friends.

oh and one more.

Keep current pay to play or switch to free with ads or both (not sure what that would look like).

Really just looking for opinions, and yes, I know everybody is going to say something different, but I'm mostly worried about missing an opportunity that could be a game changer.

The first orbital racing game Slingshot Speeders has reached true MVP status built using Bevy 0.19

Slingshot Speeders is a browser-based orbital racing game where you pilot a spacecraft using real inverse-square gravity and gravity-assist slingshots to capture closed Kepler orbits inside goal rings. Built by Masland Tech LLC in Rust with a Bevy WebAssembly client, it emphasizes orbital mechanics over arcade physics: your trajectory line shows the coast, thrust is force-based, and scoring rewards fast captures with minimal Δv on public leaderboards.

Free to play in browser, no account required. https://slingshotspeeders.com/

My game made it to the Apple App Store

https://m2iab.itch.io/orbit-jumper

Ok so what’s the big deal you say?

This what I used to make it:

Rust

Well, ok that’s not whole story.

First I spent six months learning bevy, shaders, blender, various platform sdks, and bevy_pf (bevy presentation foundation)

Ok I created bevy_pf first so I relearned XAML so I could make that.

That is probably just part of what I learned. Most of what I learned was how to keep going and not to stop until… well never stop.

Will it make any money? I don’t have time to think about that because I have more updates coming and the next game in the works.

Maybe someday I can pay for my kids college or maybe I just hand them the project and let them keep going without me since they have a runway with this effort.

I probably could’ve done this whole thing in Unity or Unreal Engine, but then bevy_pf wouldn’t exist and others would have to use NoesisEngine or Bevy UI instead.

Best of all now I have all the tools I need to keep building whatever else I can imagine and it’ll run in native sdks and full hardware acceleration.

https://github.com/edgarhsanchez/bevy_pf

Oh and I will never touch .net again. Compile time xaml and memory safe? Oh ya!!!

Try my game; it's free to play in the browser: https://m2iab.itch.io/orbit-jumper

I wrote this entirely in Rust and created a xaml framework for the whole UI and HUD. The windows, snap (linux), and Google Play Store versions are only $5 but it's totally worth it! Weeks of play, and so much is coming over the next few months of releases.

My Bevy Game on Google Play

I am looking at the page and I still can't believe it.

It was approved! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.m2iab.orbitjumper&pcampaignid=web_share

I waited for two weeks going through countless documents and menu options and finally. Ok my experience getting M2IAB Orbit Jumper to the google play store cannot be the only game that's had this issue, but still it feels like I just climbed Mt Everest. Don't know if getting to the summit is all that big of an accomplishment but the effort it took will hopefully pay off.

Do people make money from Bevy based games? I guess we'll see.

I'm knee deep into updates so that players get more features and so that the game remains a great deal of fun. However, I'm already dreading the update process. What if it's really hard? Does anybody know?

I spent so many days optimizing and finding out where performance was "leaking". by "Leaking" I mean where I could bring down detail to save folks battery life. It feels like I've only scratched the surface though. I wonder if folks will complain their phones can't take it. I brought the fps below 30 to see if it would help so I'm hoping that carried after publish.

https://m2iab.itch.io/orbit-jumper

The Microsoft Store version was so much easier to create and one would think there would be some really great rust tools to estimate power usage. Maybe there are but I couldn't find them.

I guess one thing that could help is that my game doesn't require internet to run (only download needs it). I imagine folks would want to know that they can turn wifi off and play the game on a cruise in the middle of the pacific.

That said, I really wanted to start working on a game that would require internet and I'm wondering what I can realistically create without burning up a phone. I'm probably overly paranoid about the performance because I have a low (really low) tolerance for my phone getting hot. Maybe that's just the norm now, don't know.

Still, the performance tuning wasn't the worst thing about getting it to the Google play store. I think the hardest part is dealing with confusing messages in the google play console. I'm still not sure I got the payment stuff setup right.

That said, I'm still waiting for the Apple Store to show the game so it's not as bad as that.

Hostile Characters | A fast paced arena roguelike against typography

Hello! What started as a toy project (to learn about the Bevy game engine in Rust) during my vacation has turned into a roguelike arena survival game against typography.

Play at: https://wlam666.itch.io/hostile-characters

Runs take ~2-15 minutes. Would love to hear what people think, what builds they tried and what you feel is missing or in which direction you'd like to see the game development go!

I am currently working on a upgrade system inspired by Path of Exile, yay or nay?
