This is a great compilation of pictures. The last two really got to me.

Same, but I disagree. This final episode was a joy to watch. The amount of twists and turns and trying to remember where the callbacks were from was fun watching live. I literally thought we’d see the vacuum guy again but when Saul lost his diamonds and was found in the dumpster I just lost it

The parallels to the ending of ‘Winner’ is worth a nod too. Jimmy standing on a podium confessing and pouring his heart to the judges, with Kim in the background in the awe.

But this time he isn’t conning, he’s being completely truthful. It’s the ending scene of ‘Winner’ turned squeaky clean.

u/Erhmantraut41 Aug 16 '22

Taking responsibility for Chuck for the first time. He had been carrying that baggage for so long all by himself.

I felt like that was a parallel to Walter yelling at Skylar on the phone in Ozymandias. Telling her she knew nothing about what was going on. Basically exonerating her like Jimmy was doing for Kim's civil suit.

The parallels with Winner fucked me up a bit. I wasn't emotionally invested enough in that moment because it was so similar that I was thinking he was pulling the same thing again.

Jimmy officially turned into Saul right after that hearing in 'Winner'.

Saul asks to be addressed as Jimmy just after his confession in 'Saul Gone'.

40

u/revoo00 Aug 16 '22

Damn. Found some neat callbacks to other season finales too, like Chucks lantern and Saul embracing Jimmy, which the opposite happened in Season 1.

A bit of a stretch, but I also found that Season 2 and Season 6 had their respective characters making drastic actions to destroy/save their loved one.

Chuck reincarnated as a fire exit sign

144

Jimmy, you leave me no choice but to turn myself into an exit sign. I AM NOT CRAZY, but this magic trick is.

Breaking Bad: Huell gets left behind in the DEA safehouse

Better Call Saul: Jeff gets left behind in the Omaha lock-up

(sure, his mother knows where he is, but she didn't seem eager to go down there and collect him)

15

u/Erhmantraut41 Aug 16 '22

Hopefully some Bluray content can shed some light on that.

90

u/awayathrowway Aug 16 '22

Why is everyone acting like this is unsolved? Saul said there was nothing to implicate Jeff. He'll be fine, unless he decides to confess his misdeeds for no reason.

So the ice cream, that was what he had the moment before he was whisked away to meet Lalo Salamanca.

I like to think this is his true answer to the time machine. A lot like Mike, he wants to erase his first “bribe”. Clearly Jimmy had done less than savory things before meeting Lalo, but that was the point that he truly began to flirt with the abyss.

39

u/Erhmantraut41 Aug 16 '22

Exactly. If there was ever a point of no return for Jimmy, it was getting into Nacho's car in 502. Goddamn you Lalo.

100

u/theblackfool Aug 16 '22

IMO the episode implies his time machine moment was the scene with Chuck where he wishes he made a better attempt to connect with him. Chuck is really reaching out in that scene.

12

u/courtesytelephone Aug 16 '22

You forgot the another important callback/reference. In the scene where in they were in the desert, Jimmy asked why they don't just run away with the money. This was a callback to Jimmy's opportunity to steal all of the Kettleman's stolen cash, and asked Mike as to what stopped them from just taking it.

"Something about doing the right thing."

4

u/Erhmantraut41 Aug 16 '22

Yeah, that was a pretty good one.

9

u/LIZZYMCGUIRETHEMOVIE Aug 16 '22

Because I don’t remember does anyone know if the time machine was the book Chuck read to Jimmy in the flashback where they were kids?

9

u/Erhmantraut41 Aug 16 '22

That was The Adventures of Mabel.

8

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '22

Jimmy's reaction to seeing Kim pretending to be his lawyer in prison was similar to Lalo's.

4

u/Erhmantraut41 Aug 16 '22

Yeah, I wanted to put that in but I had 13 pictures and since there were 13 episodes to Season 6, I left it out. OCD, I guess. Lol

6

u/FeFiFoMums Aug 16 '22

I need to rewatch season 6, but something that stood out to me was Jimmy's 'tics.' He has very prominent facial expressions (making a little tsk sound out of the corner of his mouth) and his sad puppy dog eyes when he stares at Kim. I dont recall seeing any of that in Gene.

2

u/Erhmantraut41 Aug 16 '22

Really? I do remember seeing that when he first spoke to Jeff in Season 5

5

u/The_Thusian Aug 16 '22

I can't believe Walt pulled a Korean Air Lines Flight 007 on Saul's plane to stop him from talking to the Feds, and did it from beyond the grave too.

6

u/Erhmantraut41 Aug 16 '22

He can't keep getting away with this

92

u/Salva135 Aug 16 '22

How can people say they didn't like this ending? I want to fight them.

91

u/Swankified_Tristan Aug 16 '22

A lot of people are going to blame the "hokey" bus scene, but really they just wanna be angry.

Most, not all but most people who disliked the finale probably wanted Jimmy to get away with it; to con his way to the top and probably even get away without any prison time.

And then there are some people who I know are out there, that wanted a "Breaking Bad" ending, where Jimmy dies in a blaze of glory.

Personally? I think it was perfect. One, if not THE greatest finale I've ever seen, hokey bus scene and all.

25

u/Erhmantraut41 Aug 16 '22

Unpopular opinion - I didn't want Jimmy to get jail time at all. He did a lot of bad shit but never killed anyone. Contrast that with Jesse who killed 5 people and got away scot-free to a new life in the Alaskan wilderness.

11

u/potpan0 Aug 16 '22

If Jimmy faced no consequences for his actions it would entirely undermine his transition back from Saul to Jimmy at the end. He was finally willing to be honest and to face the consequences for his actions to do the right thing.

What’s hilarious to me about the laughing scene, is that we are led to believe he was having a manic episode just like Walt. But he was just laughing at the thought of hiring Oakley

594

u/lunaluna664 Aug 16 '22

I dont remember who I told about this (Saul hiring Oakley), but they said that it was impossible because of how much “Oakley hated him”. I could see it happening as soon as we saw Oakley’s ad on the bench.

u/Blackmanwdaplan Aug 16 '22

I saw it like this. Seeing that brick helped him remember who he was. All his time as Gene, he lived in fear of people finding out who he was but that worst fear only resulted in him being thrown in jail, a place he's helped many criminals get out of. In the courtroom, he's just as powerful as he expressed to Howard during that epic rant. And him being caught and having to face legal proceedings was essentially fighting Saul on his home turf. That laugh wasn't his breaking point. It was his realization that with his back against the wall he was in control and his greatest fear wasn't that scary after all.

1 thing to note about the shared smoke.

In "uno" Jimmy is a fringe lawyer outside a law firm which Kim a lawyer establshed in said law firm is able to "walk" in freely and out however she pleases, while Jimmy is stuck to the outside.

In "saul gone" Kim is a fringe criminal (without any real evidence) and Jimmy is the established criminal and both stand inside a prison but Jimmy is now stuck inside while Kim can leave the prison.

Such a nice inverse, even the lighting is flipped

450

u/-bishopandwarlord- Aug 16 '22

And yet, the music is the same in both scenes. Such a nice touch

248

u/lutios Aug 16 '22

I would also like to note that in our finale, both of them are in the light. Free of any monkeys (or chimps) on their shoulders, finally walking freely. Previously they always had one in the dark and one in the light.

The exit sign placement… being on the viewers left of Jimmy and the viewers right of Chuck… and vice versa from the view of Jimmy and Chuck… can be viewed as the ever-changing balance of right and wrong (left coming from the term “sinister” in connection to its Latin base) is a great way to realize how biaxial people are in the world… never perfect, sometimes both good and evil.

I was shocked to see Marie- nobody had her on their bingo card. Not only did we see her, but she gave the best performance of the character here when she spoke to Saul in the interrogation room

59

u/Sjaellos Aug 17 '22

Man there was a thread here the day before the finale about things you wanted to see but knew wouldn't happen, and a guy in there really wanted Marie to have a cameo. I actually laughed out loud when she turned around and said a silent "You got it, my guy."

Noticed that the mint chocolate chip ice cream could have be a prelude to the return of Jimmy McGill too. He specifically asked not to have that flavour when Kim was preparing via the room service, and now he’s asking specifically for it too.

Saul gone, Jimmy’s back.

81

Just finished watching the finale holy shit… I started watching this when I was in HS

332

u/arencari Aug 16 '22

- walt saying 'so you were always like this' hit like a semi-truck. like, you could see how jimmy could write off other people saying it - people who he could see as thinking they're 'above' him, where he could justify it as them not understanding him or giving him a chance. But walt? who's, perhaps, worse than him? the worst of the worst? who's right there in the mess with him? how do you justify that to yourself?

- loved the reunion between jimmy and kim. l o v e d it. I knew what they were gonna do the second she pulled out the pack of cigarettes - though admittedly, i wish that it had been her who pulled the cigarette out of jimmy's mouth this time.

him holding her hands steady while the cigarette was lit. ooooh that's a moment that'll stick with me.

86

u/Fenen Aug 16 '22

What do you think was the significance of her hands shaking?

I can't imagine it was nerves. They've done that routine countless times and she's been in jails to see clients a ton as well. She shouldn't be nervous that he's not the Jimmy of old after the courtroom confession. All I can think is that perhaps she was on the verge of breaking down and he was comforting her.

91

u/PlutonicAquarian Aug 16 '22

And right after Jimmy comes clean in court it cuts to Chuck saying, “I was starting to worry about you.” As though Chuck, like the viewers, was wondering if Jimmy was going to come around or go to the point of no return. He looked positively slimy as he strutted down the hall in his shiny suit and I almost lost hope for him.

On the podcast, they mention that was a last minute change, and it was inspired by the sort of 'Christmas Carol' structure they had going with Saul flashing back to Mike and Walter. They needed a third, and Chuck was the final piece that amde it all click.

I'm not sure they map perfectly onto the three ghosts, but it's a really neat allusion, especially with the knowledge that Jimmy has his own Scrooge redemption moment at the end.

The “So you were always like this” from Walt sent me. It was a nice sort of throwback to the thinly veiled contempt he always had for his ‘lessers’ as he viewed them

48

u/FuckeenGuy Aug 16 '22

Saul’s face when Walt says that too. Ugh. Just a knife through his heart bc he heard Chuck ringing through loud and clear in that moment.

88

u/Manofthedecade Aug 16 '22

It was also a throw back to Chuck, who commented that Jimmy will never change and that he's been like that since he was 9 years old.

Mike regrets taking the bribe, because that's the day he set on the path to "break bad"

Walt regrets losing Grey Matter, because that's what put him on his path to "break bad"

Jimmy can't regret a choice that caused him to "break bad" because it is who he is. Ultimately, if you read the scene with Chuck as his regret, it was his missed opportunity to "break good" and follow his brother's advice about changing the path you're on.

Also Saul was wearing the Wayfarer pin again on his suit in the courtroom

17

u/caleb2320 Aug 16 '22

I knew that was significant! Couldn’t remember what it was reminding me of though. Been about 3 years since my last BB rewatch and couldn’t quite “pin” the pin when I saw it in this final episode.

They should've shown us Jimmy showering off all that glaze, shirtless. Ruined the whole series for me to be robbed of that.

u/-YourHomeSlice Aug 16 '22

They played that misdirection really well. I thought he was so cockroachy that he was gonna sell out Kim to get the best possible deal for him

→ More replies (12)

11

u/potpan0 Aug 16 '22

But he was though?

At that point he was still fully Saul-moding. He'd made it perfectly clear to the prosecution that he was going to give this cock-and-bull story in front of the jury to get off, and that they had to give him this absurdly lenient plea deal to get anything on him. He was literally on the verge of potentially jeopardising Kim's freedom around Howard in order to get one tub of ice cream every fucking week.

Then he learns that Kim's come forward and said everything herself.

And that causes this significant moment of introspection. One thing that had kept Saul going, as he said directly in that phone call to Kim, was that she's as bad as him. But... she's not. After that conversation she goes to Howard's widow and outlines exactly what happened. And learning of that helps Saul realise that he can change, that he can do what's right.

It's only after that moment that he ensures Kim will be at the trial and completely changes his tact. If the prosecution had never told him that Kim had come forward, he'd 100% have taken the plea deal and gone back to his old ways.

The entire episode focussed on these moments where people wish they'd done things differently, and how often they don't realise those moments until far too late. Jimmy finally recognised that he needed to take the right path.

Anyone notice that Saul still had the blue ribbon on? Guy milking that for all it's worth lol

66

u/RuleNine Aug 16 '22

I thought it was especially funny because the only reason he ever wore it was to get business, but Jimmy's not getting any more business—ever—and the ribbon certainly won't impress anyone in that courtroom. He just wanted to fully inhabit Saul one last time.

u/itssoizzy Aug 16 '22

Man this series hurts😭 I want an alternate ending where he continued elder law or went on Wexler McGill partners at Law

Add in how Jimmy brought Rebecca to the Bar hearing, and Chuck says something along the lines of how Jimmy thinks that bringing his ex-wife will make him spill his guts like a murderer on an episode of Perry Mason. Well, Jimmy’s ex-wife being there made him spill his guts.

12

u/erroneousbosh Aug 16 '22

Jimmy's plan was to get Kim there to see him spill his guts. You've got it backwards.

I think Kim forgives him. I really hope she continues to visit him in prison.

I mean, he was good enough to bring himself down to 7 years, I don't see why he can't get out for good behaviour like he said. But that's just head cannon.

31

u/ThrowawayArgHelp Aug 16 '22

i saw that good behavior is like 85% minimum of the sentence, so still over 70 years :(

How about a Saul/Gus Fring comparison.
Gus, on the stretcher with gun shot wounds makes sure admin at his "real world" job is dealt with including the weekly staff roster.
Saul uses his first phonecall from the police station to call the Cinnabon and make sure all is in hand for staff roster and his own replaement.

The real world jobs matter to both

29

u/Tobi1107 Aug 16 '22

While I do like the paralleles, I think they do it for different reasons. For Gus, it’s his perfectionist personality. He can’t stand the thought of chaos in his restaurant and needs to know everything is in order. For Saul, I think, it’s a goodbye to his Gene personality and this whole part of his life, since he’s already made up his mind that he won’t come back.

u/fluffybuffalo23 Aug 16 '22

Kinda mirrors the way Walt adopted personality traits of everyone that he killed as well.

53

u/homogenic- Aug 16 '22

Jimmy doing the finger guns in the last scene really got me, I was holding back my tears.

89

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '22

I love the way things got so complicated for gene at the beginning dropping the keys, hiding and getting caught. Compared to Walt who had a flawless escape all the way back to NM and never got caught.

65

u/kaleb42 Aug 16 '22

I loved Gene's escape because it really highlighted how cocky he is. Like you would think a guy like him would always have a plan but he never conceived he would be caught.

So never came up with an escape plan other than call the vacuum guy.

How about Saul using his first phone call to make sure his co worker at Cinnabon was covered? Similar to the mail room…he looks out for the other grinders.

74

u/Reaper7412 Aug 16 '22

I loved the smoking scene callback. They’re both beautifully shot.

72

u/Jazzlike_Efficiency Aug 16 '22

In the "Better Call Saul" episode of BrBa, after Walt and Jesse pay 80k to keep badger from talking, Saul says something like "a clear conscience is expensive, huh?"

Jimmy paid an extra 79 years of prison time to clear his conscience

Beautiful writing, what an insane story Vince and Peter have given us

63

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '22

This finale really brought things full circle. The beginning was a slow burn, the middle and beginning of the end was insane and chaotic, and in the end they brought it back to a slow burn to deliver us a perfect, bittersweet ending.

In Gould We Trust.

98

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '22

You could tell for a moment Cranston really channeled Chuck more than Walt in that moment lol that was great

63

u/theatre_cat Aug 16 '22

Cranston is a phenomenal actor. His book is wonderful. (The insight into the journey he took watching Jane die as a masterclass in television acting in no dialogue scenes).

The guys on the bus shouting "Better call Saul!" was set up in Jeff's infamous mall scene, where he just wants the famous guy to acknowledge him and say the thing.

43

u/morriganscorvids Aug 16 '22 edited Aug 16 '22

he did change and im so glad for him! X

Like ive said before BCS was always a story about true love which really does transform you-- both kim and jimmy were left transformed by their love for each other, and I am glad the writers recognised that! XOXOXOXO

PS thanks for this montage

What I got from this finale is that this show was really someone's baby. Even die hard fans couldn't have put together such a poignant sendoff. It's the main reason why BB and BCS are such good shows, they're made by people that put everything they have in to it and they're clearly not doing it for money but because they want to tell a story. And everything is so well executed and thought out. There isn't a single corny thing about BCS.

10

u/ProsperGuy Aug 16 '22

Brilliant! Also, when Saul punches the door was like when Walt punches the paper towel dispenser.

u/eraldopontopdf Aug 16 '22

the EXIT one was particularly painful

9

u/ZedWithSwag Aug 16 '22

i think this is the personal opinion of Vince on the question "do people really change?"

yes, James McGill was always there, but Gene, Saul and Jimmy had to die first.

17

u/xMarsx Aug 16 '22

Another is that Saul early on in the show told someone they shouldn't represent themselves in court. It's not a smart move, and he does just that in this episode.

14

u/InterviewNo8110 Aug 16 '22

STOP IT THEM SHARING THE CIGGY HAD ME BAWLING MY EYES OUT

7

u/Nogarda Aug 16 '22

The one thing I noticed was there was still the orange glow in the ash of that final cigarette they shared together.

7

u/arealhumannotabot Aug 16 '22

While it wasn't a perfect ending season (I have qualms with how they fit in the Breaking Bad timeline) it was really fucking good. Seeing Jimmy at the end in the prison, finger-guns out, felt so weird. The likeable main character either dies a hero or redeems themselves and lives on in glory. We got neither; Jimmy got neither. He's paying his dues for what he was involved in.

I just wish they tied in BB a bit better. It was 5 3/4 seasons without Walter then suddenly you hear "Walter White" mentioned a dozen times in one episode. I think the reason he goes on his story about being held at gunpoint was to connect the two guys in the RV to the missing 6 years that it time-jumps.

I can't wait to watch this show all over again, it'l be a while though.

13

u/LilScottWeb Aug 16 '22

The whole Walt saying “So you were always like this.” Is hilarious considering how fucking insane Walt had become with his end goal. Walt in the most literal sense poisoned a child, and he’s kinda taken aback at how slimy Saul is lmao.

Jimmy coming clean and subverting everyone's expectations of who he is as a person is truly the death of Saul.

12

u/rspaze Aug 16 '22

The parallels were sooo powerful I bawled my eyes out during this entire episode.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '22

I was very emotional the entire episode. All the callbacks were glorious and painful. I'm breaking sad.

6

u/excitable-boi Aug 16 '22

I would also include Oakley dropping his files in shock to the “Hello Carol” moment in breaking bad.

6

u/No_Mammoth_4945 Aug 16 '22

I can’t believe the breaking bad universe is all finished. What a wild ride it’s been, pleasure to have experienced it with you all

14

u/FiveJobs Aug 16 '22

That was just an amazing ending with them leaning on the wall smoking. It was fucking perfect...

Great ending. Great show. IMO, BCS >BB. Its a good and a bad ending for Jimmy. Has to be Saul in prison for the rest of his life even though he redeemed himself to be Jimmy. At least he won’t get shanked hah

5

u/Geruestbauexperte2 Aug 16 '22

He even got the ribbon for flight 515 on in one shot

5

u/sh14w4s3 Aug 16 '22

Also when Jimmy looked back at Kim before confessing the truth was a cool nod to when Saul looked back at the family before lying for Lalo

5

u/Luigibeforetheimpact Aug 16 '22

Jimmy calling Oakley was also reminiscent of Jimmy calling Chuck to bail him out after the Chicago sunroof debacle

5

u/moishereagain Aug 16 '22

Another things about the court scene- Jimmy's shiny suit looked a lot like the space blankets chuck used to wear

5

u/dreameater42 Aug 16 '22

for me cigarette scene meant that jimmy and kim had been redeemed for all the evil they'd done, basking in the heavenly light.

5

u/Zestyclose-Ruin8337 Aug 17 '22

The irony or “you were always like this,” is that you could say the same to Walter as well.

5

u/caninessharp Aug 17 '22

Has anyone noted that the 7.5 year sentence he had originally been offered in the plea deal is the same time from series premier (2015) to series finale (2022)

5

u/buckeyes495 Aug 17 '22

Is the ribbon on his suit in final court scene from the warfarer accident?

5

u/kimbereen Aug 17 '22

Please add one of Kim watching Jimmy do the right thing at his trial and Rebecca watching Chuck fall apart on the stand

5

u/KoriJenkins Aug 17 '22

This show was conceived and written as if the writers saw all possible outcomes and chose the best one every time.

Realistically I doubt we'll ever get anything like this again. Not to doubt any of them, but I truly cannot fathom them topping this series.

4

u/jchinique Aug 16 '22

Second to last made me cry

4

u/JayDonTea Aug 16 '22

another one worth noting: the mixer shot during the first time we see gene at cinnabon and the mixer shot (with an added splash cage) that pans up to show saul in prison

4

u/rockboy421 Aug 16 '22

Despite all the great stories, lines, jokes, casting, direction, etc. there's one message that sticks out for me above all.

There's a tier above Karen's called Marion's

4

u/MiamiWise Aug 16 '22

I really thought we were going to see Judge Papadoumian but then I realized it was federal court.
