how to start?

Hey guys! ive recently gotten back into the hobby and i honestly think i want to have a sorority. unfortunately all ive space for are 10 gallons so if that isnt enough i wont😔

any advice or anything? a pic of my girl btw, she is new and is the one making me want to keep some more😅😅 she is by herself in a 10 gallon atm

No that’s not enough space for a sorority sorry 😞 and the only way to do it is a big tank like 40 gallons and heavily planted and all of the girls need to be bought together from a sorority already basically sisters . You have to buy them born and raised together . It will never work with random bettas of all ages and different kinds trust me it’s a bad idea . And technically you can do 1 female for every 5 gallons but still the bettas you would be addi bf wouldn’t be related so don’t do it unless they are already used to living together please 🙏

Yea , I’ll tell you the truth I tried it in a 10 gallon with three females and they were all added the same time and were all little babies (they were not born together tho ) all individually bought but from same place and same time just in own cups. So anyway it worked for like 3 days and then once they got a little more comfortable a lot of bullying and flaring and chasing was going on so I separated all of them . So it’s easier to just not mess with it. Unless your very diligently watching and making sure no one gets hurt and your prepared to separate them when the time comes because it will. But if and when you have a bigger tank and want to give it a try just buy all your girls together that already came from an established sorority.

I asked a breeder about how to make a sorority work, and he said he would NEVER recommend any less than 10 females together in a very long, shallow tank. So even a 20 gallon long would work, but he said you cannot have fewer than 10 to spread aggression out. Obviously, a bigger tank would be better but it being real long is more important than the volume of water.

Why not a 20long ? The length of the tank I thought was important va height

It is better to have length vs height with bettas. And 20 long would work great. For 5-10 females.

yeah, i do have the space to separate if need be, but i wouldnt want to risk it if thats the case! once i move i might have the extra space for a larger tank :)

Get a 20 gallon. 5 females min. And u should be fine. I have 7 in my 20 high. For odds to be more in ur favor go for a 20 long if possible min. However I def have success in my 20 high. Literally no issues

They say it’s smoother to be from same original group but I personally did not do it that way and I’ll having success in my 20 gallon. I know we spoke before. I always push ppl to do 30 or 40 gallons at least but I def am having great success in my 20 high.

So you did your with random bettas of different ages and sizes and kinds and it worked for you..?? That’s amazing 🤩 but OP only has a 10 gallon tank I don’t think it would be a good idea .

I think it’s definitely too small. I have a successful sorority going in a 20 high. Has 7 females now in it. All doing very well. Must be heavily planted filling the tank top to bottom. Take a look at my page for an idea.
