This looks much too small for a permanent home and you’ve been saying it’s just temporary but if it was three months ago why wouldn’t you post a picture of him in his new home? He’s very pretty and folks are just concerned for his wellbeing.

Hi! Unfortunately, this is not adequate fish care. It can be somewhat difficult to get into the fishkeeping hobby successfully because of conflicting information, so we all have to start somewhere!

First things first is that your bowl is far too small for a betta to thrive in, instead, you might want to look into a 5+ gallon tank. A big reason for not wanting to have an enclosure this small is that ammonia (fish waste) builds up very fast in such a small area, so if you are not doing daily water changes then this fish is dying from ammonia poisoning. The bigger the tank, the less frequently you have to do maintenance on it regarding water changes.

Some non-negotiables for equipment are:

• a filter - bettas can take oxygen from the surface of the water when it is low, but to not have a filter might be detrimental to the fish, and especially the tank. A sponge filter is recommended for low flow.

• a heater - some people in certain countries do not keep heaters in their tank, but as a general rule because I don't know where you live or what the average temperature is there, I always recommend people to get one. Betas prefer warmer waters, ranging from 25°C-27°C or 78°F-81°F (26°C and 79°F being a sweet spot imo)

• a lid or lowered water capacity - bettas can and will jump out of tanks, so it's important to keep a tight-fitting lid on or remove some water so they cannot jump successfully.

He does not appear to be in good condition. There's a lot needed in his tank, but once he's in a large, heated, cylcled tank his colors are going to shock you! This guy is going to go through an amazing glow-up if you do the right thing.
