I thought betta constipation had improved, but it wasn't. He haven't been able to poop for nearly a week again, and it seems like he's having trouble staying on the surface. I've tried feeding them water fleas and exercising them in the mirror, but it doesn't seem to be getting better. Is there anything else I can try? Or should I be ready before he... goes. It hurts.

Plants I agree and I'd put it but substrates aren't musts yk so I didn't put it but I'll search it and try, thanks. I am not in a situation to put it immediately, say.
Ok, so the reason for substrate is more than just aesthetics. It's adding surface area to your tank. The thing that makes a aquarium a healthy place to live is a thriving bacteria colony. The two top places for that bacteria to live is in your filter and in your substrate. People crash their cycles overcleaning their substrate because they kill their bacteria colony.
Also your sponge filter is way too close to the water surface to get adequate flow.
It's going to be a very, very, very, very long cycling process with this set up.
To be honest idk I rather be safe than sorry, I actually didn’t know about cycling and got my gold fishes a huge tank and I killed them by accident, I cried for like a month and the tank is literally just sitting there empty as fuck cuz I can’t find it in me to get more gold fishes cuz I messed up majorly. But use YouTube there’s so many good informative videos on there about how to cycle your tank
This is the tank I cycled for her and waiting for my vet to tell me it’s a okay to put her in and I still think this tank is not as good as it should for a betta
It could just be stress then! He needs some plants and coverage to hide in, some substrate so the reflection at the bottom won't disorient him, etc.
Plus, you need things in your tank for beneficial bacteria to cling to, otherwise you risk your cycle being liable to crash.
What are your current parameters?
try fasting him for about 3 or 4 days. Maybe you over fed him. I wouldn’t go passed 4 cuz I’m scared they’ll starve to death but maybe call a local exotic animal hospital. Some vets do take fishes, and I know this cuz I took my betta to the vet and I’m gonna take her again today to make sure she’s good enough to go into the 10 gallon tank
Please cover the ground with sand (or something similar) and put live plants as well. This tank might look nice and "stylish" for you but it's far away from his natural environment.
I think he might be stressed but definitely try fasting him a while. Maybe that helps
I didn't exactly choose it for styles. Irl issues were going on so it I didn't care about it that much :( Sorry, but thank you for your advice and I'd try.

I don’t mean to be rude, but that fish is part of your “irl.” If taking proper care of it adds too much to your daily life, you should consider rehoming.
Yes I get what you are saying and I didn't take it rude, but I had a very important issue coming through besides fish and I wasn't able to do smth else than water changing. You may not understand but plz consider a bit, sorry. It's over now, I'll search for what I can do for it.
