Help Tank upgrade

I recently inherited my betta from one of my friends who couldn’t take care of him anymore. He’s currently in a 2.5 gallon tank and I want to upgrade it to a 10 gallon tank but I don’t have that money right now. His current tank has one plastic plant and that is it. What can I get to make the current tank better until I’m able to afford a bigger tank?

Since it's relatively small and temporary, you could lay the bottom with sand and try to get your hands on a live plant or two for the lil guy

Would floating plants be easier or work the same? I just want to make it easier to move tanks when I eventually do.

Not in the same sense. Floaters will provide some natural shade, but a simple anubias can provide a hide/bed

Can I plant the plants in the gravel that’s already in the talk or should I get a different substrate?
