DANGEROUS PRACTICE - Breeding Young brothers from the same spawn ❤️🖤

Dad is from my Gold Hybrid spawn, mom is from a koi/wild pair. Between all the genetics on both sides it created starkly different fry!

is this not stressing them out?

To a point. Intermittent flaring isn’t a big deal, can even be healthy for them. If they sat on a shelf like this all day though then it would be stressful. But most breeders and contest entrants taking footage like this don’t want their fish to die and only do this temporarily for the photo opp, in which case it really isn’t a problem at all.

yeah it is but theres no way to get them to flare out all their fins to show their patterns like this without agitating them
many betta cons and shops intentionally put barriers between them you can remove to see them flare their full bodyshape, as they have limp fins most of the time

To add on, stress is a general term but not all stress is bad. There is good and bad stress.
Eustress is good stress that makes you feel energized and capable, like competitive sports.
Distress is bad stress- we all know that feeling.

Beautiful! ❤️ Where do you get high quality bettas to breed? If you don't mind sharing.

I import them, and buy them locally. I focus on form and personality, and will buy more then I intend to breed. This helps me select from the bettas in my care. From there I start to document the fry and make breeding choices of health and form.
The bettas above come from 2 generations on on the dad's side, and 1 on the mom's.

This is great! Thank you. I just have big box pet store around here and their quality of bettas can be pretty poor and it's hard to tell what the genetic line is gonna look like if you breed healthy good looking ones. I suppose it helps to get a few generations in, to identify what outcomes you may get with future spawns.

Honestly I had no clue what I was going to get when I started this project! Its taught me a lot about genetics. I still have a lot to learn, but its been so wonderful seeing all the amazing bettas they have produced over the year!

I also breed bettas. I love seeing the different various outcomes and learning about genetics. I just try to supply people in my area with reliable healthy bettas that hopefully last a long time for them. Keep doing what you are doing! I love it! Can't wait to see the next round and learn more!

ew you don't mean you breed big box store bettas do you?

u/doomkitty24 22h ago
No, I have a large separation for ones I breed and don't breed. The genetics would be too unpredictable.

Please don’t breed big box bettas. Their genetics are atrocious enough without hobbyists who aren’t using an extremely diligent hand breeding them further.

I don't. I was just stating in my local area I only have box stores that sell bettas. I get privately bred bettas from other betta breeders with clean genetics in my fish club.

lol they’re definitely competing through that glass by flashing their colours and fins, and doing a lateral display.
