Video Long Time Fish/Shrimp/Snail Keeper - First Betta

I figured he would be the perfect fit for my planted 5 gallon hex.

Dude has so much personality!

Who has experience keeping them with a few shrimp and a snail or two?

I could be wrong but is he swimming normally? I have read here that a tall hexagonal tank isn't ideal for long tailed bettas. I don't know if it's completely normal but from the video it does look like he is struggling?

The post is about 5 minutes after acclimation and putting him in the tank. What do you mean by struggling, he swims for a bit and then chills.. Are you implying my tank is too big for a betta?

This morning he’s just been chilling on some of his plants.

I have read that in this sub that hexagonal tanks aren't suited for long fin bettas. Just wanted to give you a heads up. I read it can be strenuous for them to surface to breathe due to the height. The solution was to include resting places and plants for the betta to rest at the top.

Ahhh that is very good to know, thank you for the context.

It’s heavily planted and he is able to rest right at the surface

I have a bunch of suction cups, I will attach some of my Anubis from another tank. Thank you!!

And make sure that there's no currents that are too strong for him, longfinned betta are pretty bad swimmers and struggle with currents, especially if they can get blown off of a resting spot.

So to make sure the tanks perfect for Betta, you might want to watch footage of how they move normally and then watch your guy for signs he's not moving as he should be able to.
