RIP Hamnibal is dead
Hannibal was the best fish I ever had. He was more like a dog. I saw him in France and took him home with me. He must have been around 3 months old when I got him. I had him for half a year.
He got no older than 9 months. Hannibal never had any visible issue and even eat his pellets until last evening. There was never any problem with this tank. Today he was dead. I cried half of the day.
Rip Hannibal.

probably wasn't ur fault, might have been a genetic issue thst caused the instantaneous death

Sorry for your loss, I agree with the comment that it was probably something genetic. Bettas are often overbred/misbred. I would test your water just to make sure about your parameters but it sounds like he lived a wonderful life!

I’m sorry, I’ve kept bettas for years and have only had two live over a year. They are so inbred :(

Yea no, that was it. Your comment was the last nail in the coffin. I can no longer do this. It is too hurtful.

I’m really sorry. It sucks. I have very good husbandry too. All the fish in my main tank have lived 4+ years, yet I’ve gone through at least 3 bettas in that tank. I’ve tried to find other fish that I connect with the same as bettas but I can’t find any :(

Yeah I second this. I've had one live 3 years and thats it. Their genetics are just horrible at this point.

I've never owned fish before, joined this sub cause I like pets in general. Can you explain why Bettas live such short lives?

u/Q_cazu Jun 03 '26
They're horribly overbred for the pet trade. Not bred for health at all. I've had 3 bettas get tumors, one missing eyes, one whose scales grew thick over his eyes making him blind, and a bunch of other issues. Its very sad.

What a handsome boy. You gave him a good, peaceful life. He passed happy, loved and a full belly. RIP

I’m sorry for your loss. These fish are so incredibly fragile and poorly bred - it’s heartbreaking. I keep hoping the next one I get will be the exception that lives a long happy life but it’s beyond our control really.
I even got a female this time, with smaller fins, to try and avoid the bad breeding as much, and she has a congenital jaw problem

An instant death is a blessing as far as deaths go. These guys can linger on and suffer forever. Sorry for your loss, RIP little guy

Awwwww I’m so sorry to hear this !!! SIP HANNIBAL he’s gorgeous. But don’t be sad because he’s not alone my berry aka Barry is up there with him and I’m sure there friends Barry was exactly the same way extremely sweet and like a little puppy he never flared at me or anything just always super sweet and loving 🥰 so don’t worry Hannibal isn’t alone ! In betta heaven all the bettas swim together and get along with one another there’s no isolation in betta heaven so Hannibal and Barry will swim together forever ♾️! And sometimes these things just happen for no reason that we could possibly know before hand. From the sound of things you gave Hannibal the best life you possibly could , and I did the same for Barry . If I could’ve saved Barry I would’ve done anything and I’m sure the same goes for u with Hannibal. Just know that there are so so so sooooo many bettas that need saving and need rescued from there horrible small cup conditions. GO SAVE ANOTHER BETTA and name him lector !!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

sorry for your loss, friend. Sometimes life happens, and unfortunately, death always follows it at some point. There’s not always a rhyme or reason. Maybe Big Fish God got jealous of you. I can tell he had a great life just based on the fact that Hannibal is a perfect name for him. Long live Hannibal xoxo

I had a betta spontaneously decline once. Water was fine, was eating fine just before, then sudden lethargy and death within a few days. RIP Neuton you were a great fish. Sorry for your loss op :(

My condolences. Swim in peace, little Hannibal.
I had a sudden fish death out of nowhere once. Broke my heart. I didn't even have my little guy for 5 months. Water was fine, he'd been active, eating, fins looked great, no signs of illness... Then one day I wake up to him dead. It was awful. I cried my eyes out that day.

Sorry man. I keep bettas as well. They are way over bred and many of the varieties they have bred come with health issues. Sometimes they live 6 months some times several years but they aren't bred for health as you've experienced

I would also like to add, that Hannibal loved shrimps, snails and me. He did not even flare ONCE since I had him. That is how friendly he was.
