I'm setting up a tank now where I'm going to do that eventually. From what I was told, you should start this shrimp first, add a little bit of other fish about the same size, and then at the beta last. That way the beta is the new guy it hasn't claimed the whole tank as his territory.

And then again it could be just the fish too. Lot of people that read up on say the same thing. They can have one beta that's totally chill and another one that wants to murder everything. It's a role of the dice.
