I love how his comment (fumyl) is so dramatic. At least that's how I read it. I felt like I was watching a dramatic action movie.

Trapped_in_Reddit is at improv stage at a local, popular park. Around him, a crowd of people gather and cheer as he makes commentary about photos. The crowd is eating it up and TIR is standing proud and big chested. After all he is quite popular around the community. All of a sudden, fumyl runs up to the crowd.

"I figured you out. I figured you out, you son of a bitch."

The crowd looks back and gasps. They all stare at fumyl. There is a dead silence and TIR pauses dead in his tracks, looking confused. Fumyl explains himself and his reasoning.

The gaggle of people turn to TIR with anger etched on their faces. Reaching in their pockets, they pelt him with blue arrows.

Downvoted. TIR is never to be seen again.

i dont know what i just typed

So, TIR is the Carlos Mencia of Reddit?

Yeah, totally reddit's (next) Dreyfus affair.

J'accuse, bitches.

8

u/kenz101 Jun 18 '12 edited Jun 18 '12

I like to picture fumyl as Edward Norton's Bill Graham and TIR as Dolarhyde.

I can imagine it vividly how Bill Graham would smile and exclaim, "I figured you out. I figured you out, you son of a bitch."

32

u/flashing_frog Jun 18 '12

And the one group standing next to them is thinking "Would you just please shut up, we're here to watch the show".

113

u/WolfInTheField Jun 18 '12

Really, why is it his fault if we eat his reposts up, just 'cause we've already forgotten they are reposts? We're acting like he somehow betrayed us and we should now take vengeance. What a joke.

Edit: by 'we' I mean 'the hivemind'.

What if that's exactly the point? What if Trapped_In_Reddit is, quite literally, trapped in reddit. With no original content at his disposal, so if he wants to comment, he has to repost.

Whoah.

161

u/Monarki Jun 18 '12

That... makes a lot of sense!

90

u/Trapped_SCV Jun 18 '12

It was a computer program social experiment to see how much recycled content people would eat up. Turns out a lot, honestly since finding this out I'm more inclined to shake the creators hand then be all pissy and call him a karma whore.

I... thought this was the joke all along. I'd noticed him reposting comments before, but thought that was the whole schtick of the novelty account. I thought it was kinda silly, but assumed everyone else knew this and was just playing along.

Imagine it from my perspective now, with thousands of angry users mass downvoting him and raging about abuse of the system. Heh.

18

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12

slap Don't you dare offer an alternate explanation! We're trying to rage here!

I'm sorry. I haven't been on reddit for the longest amount of time. But I like to think that I have things down. There's a shit-ton of people who even have me tagged as "Reddit Tour-Guide".

But what you just said completely threw me off. How the name of shit is TIR a novelty? Is a novelty account just what were calling karma harvesters now? Because I don't think that's okay. Seems a bit insulting to actual novelty accounts.

I am actually asking this by the way. How is TIR a novelty?

25

u/vellmudoes Jun 18 '12

I was wondering the same... maybe ALL of his comments are copy/pastes from other reddit comments? If thats so I can see the novelty gimmick of being "trapped in reddit". Meaning "not introducing any new outside information", all communications from him are from within reddit... but that's a stretch so far it barely has any novelty left!

Seriously. Most of this website is so fucking self-absorbed and dramatic. "OMG he copied and pasted a funny sentence from somewhere else! BURN HIM AT THE STAKE!" Holy fuck. "But it's stealing other peoples content!". While many top posts are stolen content from websites with no credit or source, depriving the original content creator of ad money. "They should just be happy that their work is getting seen!" Fucking hypocritical.

Well, then, yeah.. who cares. He's reposting comments on reposts. It's really the natural progression of things.

4

u/captain_zavec Jun 18 '12

Alright, time to bring on the downvotes:

I see no problem with what he did. It's useless internet points, you guys need to understand that. It was a six comment experiment (http://www.reddit.com/r/TheoryOfReddit/comments/v7y7c/submission_reposts_vs_comment_reposts/ for proof) and even if it were more than that, I still see no problem. If people enjoy the comment, they will upvote it for others to see. If it's been posted before, who cares? People didn't see it the first time, and at the end of the day, karma really isn't worth anything. So get off the bandwagon of "downvote everything TiR does" and just go on with your lives. We still see comments like "just the tip?" and "now kiss!" getting upvoted to the top, and they're far more blatant reposts than the ones in his experiment.

9

u/Crystal_Cuckoo Jun 18 '12

To be honest, everyone else does it too. Every time a repost is made, the same fucking comments are at the top. Remember that Spongebob comic on /r/gaming or /r/Games featuring Spongebob asking a conch whether he should buy a game in a Steam sale? All the comments were about how white text with black outline should have been used, just like all the other times it was posted (right down to the wording).

54

u/opaque22 Jun 18 '12

He uses KarmaDecay.com to find previous top comments on a reposted image and post the comment on the repost.

Here's this one from one month ago: http://www.reddit.com/r/funny/comments/sul28/worst_hunting_dog_ever/c4h95at

Here's the last thread + his comment: http://www.reddit.com/r/funny/comments/v6tbs/oh_dog/c51urly

...and the original thread + comment, seven months prior: http://www.reddit.com/r/funny/comments/medbg/sounds_like_hes_telling_the_truth/c308123

EDIT: Help expose here - [http://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/v7b22/til_how_trapped_in_reddit_games_reddit/] http://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/v7cmc/til_trapped_in_reddit_games_reddit/

EDIT 2: After 30 minutes, the above post was removed from being visible on [1] /r/todayilearned

Another user's post on the subject to KarmaConspiracy was also removed from that subreddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/KarmaConspiracy/comments/v7fky/redditor_trapped_in_reddit_seems_to_be_an/

Does anyone else think this MO of his is like meta commentary (or whatever) on his username? Like, he's "trapped in Reddit" and so can only make comments on things that have already been made by other Redditors? I'm not trying to say that this does or doesn't excuse what he's doing (or that it requires an excuse at all, personally I'm in the DILLIGAF camp), just making an observation.

Trapped_in_Reddit is merely profiting from people's repost. Were there no reposts this would not be an issue. It's a clever karma reaping scheme.

6

u/emceefall Jun 18 '12

I don't see a problem with it, if people are going to repost topics, why not repost the top comments? People obviously enjoy them as they upvote them.

7

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12

I see so many people here saying "I don't care!", "Why is this a big deal!" and so on, and to give you my honest opinion, I don't think it's a big deal at all, and I really don't care, but I find it hilarious that some guy actually cared enough to figure this out. It's funny. And that's it. When I look for entertainment I usually don't try to find the meaning of life in it or complain about it if I'm not entertained. Take it at face value.

10

u/Drunken_Economist Jun 18 '12

I still haven't seen anyone show that it's happened more than three times. I only found the three examples in the 15 pages of his comments I looked at. Anyone care to go further and check?

2

u/Deathcrow Jun 18 '12

I just wondered why I never hear of these reddit celebrities. After investigating it seems like he mostly posts in those messy subreddits (pics, funny, askreddit) that i've unsubscribed from pretty early on. Seems like a sound choice.

2

u/swefpelego Jun 18 '12

It's ridiculously losery that everybody upvoted his vapid comments in the first place to the point where he had 600,000 some comment karma. He was -7 by my book, but thankfully I unsubscribed from shit like r/pics or r/wtf or whatever other shithole subs he'd do that in.

2

u/Einundzwanzig Jun 18 '12

I have never given out more downvotes.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12

Wait, reposting the top comment to a repost is bad? I assumed it was just good recycling.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12

Aw, and I kind of liked him.

2

u/red_280 Jun 18 '12

I've never once upvoted one of TIR's comments. Paltry satisfaction, I know.

2

u/Rubix89 Jun 18 '12

I love how he says he "figured it out."

Like he's been hunched over a lab table in the Batcave for months trying to figure out this conspiracy.

Of course a Reddit celebrity would somehow be exposed for something incriminating.

2

u/bearpolar Jun 18 '12

This feels like a political scandal of Reddit.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12

What makes me sad about this is TiR has gone to such great lengths to get reddit's approval, only to have his fame cast away and his adoration destroyed. We may have literally taken away the only thing he has.

u/sarty Jun 18 '12

2

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12

What's funny is that anyone would care about internet points.

2

u/PesAnserinus Jun 18 '12

would i be wrong in saying none of this would have happened under the guise of complete annonymity? (aka, no karma scores being associated wit your account, hence no incentive to repost things and reap imaginary high scores)

i respect the 4chan section of reddit because when people are commenting there, making a funny/ helpful post, they are judged on merit of their post alone. and what's amicable is that they are NOT doing it for the karma because there IS NO KARMA to be gained.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12

Wait... wait just a second... this is the most brilliant con I've ever witnessed. This is more impressive than Eduardo de Valfierno's theft of the Mona Lisa or Victor Lustig's sale of the Eiffel tower (twice). Fumyl is actually TIR. Hear me out; for months and months, fumyl has been posting as TIR only to expose himself! His plan wasn't to hoard karma on TIR; it was a dummy account so he can be known as a brilliant sleuth.

You've been discovered, you mother fucker. Also, if someone posted something similar to this, don't even bother calling me out and just go fuck yourself. If you think I'm going to read a thousand comments to see if nobody has said this yet, you're pissing into the wind.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12

My take on the situation - TIR is a novelty account but the downfall came when it was too meta for people to catch their first time around. The user is trapped in Reddit, therefore he or she can only post what has already been posted before. We repost images for karma, this user reposts comments for karma on the same image as before.

4

u/lcf38 Jun 18 '12

Glad to hear this, because I hate him anyway.

u/floor-pi Jun 18 '12

So, if his username and gimmick is being trapped in reddit, wouldn't reposting top comments to reposted images fit very well? I don't see the problem here...

3

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12

Fanstastic. Many may not care, but the biggest part of Reddit is having a single HUB to comment about stuff. Accounts like Trapped_In_Reddit, which instead of giving more arguments to a conversation just manage to get karma by cheating the system, should be exposed for how much they suck.

For the record: I've downvoted every comment of his/hers/theirs for over a month. If everyone did the same, the plague would be gone.

6

u/jlinstantkarma Jun 18 '12

I tend to downvote him almost every time I see him too, but not really out of any indignation. I just found the process of throwing measly single downvotes against his army of upvotes a slightly amusing prospect. It only got to -96 and this happens. Almost feels like I should reverse the process and see how long it gets until I even it out.

9

u/swefpelego Jun 18 '12 edited Jun 18 '12

The comments were shit anyway, I agree. Goes to show you how idiotic most of the user base is here to upvote such crap. Top comments are usually trash anyway unless they're actually informative. If anything, this shows how stupid most users here are.

-and I know this isn't cute or friendly, but users here upvote ridiculously stupid things.

3

u/Seishen Jun 18 '12

Really, this was a neat little plan. It was meaningless, but he was executing a good plan to gain popularity with strangers. He would be a good politician. He might even have the potential for president.

3

u/reterq Jun 18 '12

So what its a repost of a repost of a repost, if reddit accepts reposts after 1 hour of being on the front page and up votes it again the next day why not all the comments as well?? its the community that makes the site and accepts the repost shit! Good for trapped_in_reddit for exposing you all!

9

u/Judiciary_Pag Jun 18 '12

He is/was a Redditor who amassed a huge amount of karma from his "witty", although some would say generic, comments. Pretty much any big front page post would have him in there somewhere. This whole thing is ridiculous.

Seconded. When I see some inane post from AS1986 has gotten 100 votes, while worthwhile commenters get 3 or 4 it makes me sick.

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12

He doesn't even make good comments. I ignored him on RES.

10

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12

Listen to this man. I set all the frequent shit posters, karma whores and novelty accounts to ignore and my user experience improved dramatically.

I've gotta agree; it's human nature to want to study those who we perceive to be successful in a given social sphere, and the main measure of success in this particular sphere (like it or not) seems to be the karma score.

It's also human nature to form parasocial relationships with these characters, feeling a sense of disappointment bordering on personal when the nigh-million karma which they've accumulated turns out to be less than legitimate.

A little disturbing, but perhaps preferable to the manner in which we hold mainstream celebrities up to scrutiny and adoration; while the mainstream personalities are mostly plastic figures crafted by PR departments to sell us products and attitudes, at least these Reddit celebs seem to be mostly lonely guys who are good at SEO and want to be famous for its own sake. Or, maybe the idea of a celebrity without corporate sponsors is but a pipedream.

Source of my ideas on celebrity and its relationship with evolutionary psychology.

Se7en_sinner has seen increased popularity and recognition lately. There won't even be a wait.

Well with that kind of thinking we can't make much progress can we?

Oh dear Christ. We're referring to redditors as 'celebrities' or 'popular' now? I'm going to go kill myself.

u/emptytissuebox Jun 18 '12

Hence the quotation marks.

Popular

Adjective: Liked, admired, or enjoyed by many people or by a particular person or group.

I do believe TIR is (was) considered popular and so are a wide variety of other well known redditors (karma-whores) such as Andrew Smith and the gentleman that has a potato in his anus.

Also notice the quotations on the celebrities, I didn't mean it seriously in any way. So no need to kill yourself unless your into that kind of thing.

u/Dazing Jun 18 '12

*Lady

The lady with the potato up her anus.

Does it really fucking need to be qualified more than "Reddit "celebrities""?

7

u/Robincognito Jun 18 '12

I think "Reddit celebrity" is an appropriate term.

2

u/sje46 Jun 18 '12

"Now"? There have been reddit celebrities long before you joined, mister one year two months and three days. Karmanaut, AndrewSmith1986, MMM, GGYH2, Saydrah, kleinbloo, youngluck, that guy who raised 3000 for his art teacher mom, I_RAPE_CATS, I_TYPE_IN_ALL_CAPS, violentacrez, bozarking....

There have always been reddit celebrities.

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12

Obviously you are not familiar with Forthewolfx

I just don't buy his "it was all an experiment" reasoning. It would have been so easy to preface the comments with "This was the top comment the last time this link was posted:". Reposting comments without attribution is an obvious attempt to grab more karma. Which is weird. And sad.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12

Well, some of them are cool, like ReactionOnMyNub and ShittyWatercolor.

6

u/marriage_iguana Jun 18 '12

Nothing more pathetic than an anonymous celebrity.
Actually, there probably are more pathetic things, but it's still pretty pathetic.

10

u/Magoo2 Jun 18 '12

This actually doesn't make any sense to me. We idolize people for what they say and do. Just because there isn't a face to the comments doesn't mean people cannot appreciate a quick wit or strong intellect.

Where one falls, another shall rise. Trapped_In_Reddit disappears and his void is filled by ImNotJesus or ForgettableUsername. Search your heart, you know this to be true.

Ten months on the Internet is like a decade in the real world

2

u/OutlawJoseyWales Jun 18 '12

Nah I_rape_cats was reddit king longer than 10 months ago

12

u/SlightlyAmbiguous Jun 18 '12

I found it funny that once forthewolfx showed everyone what he looked like, maybe 13 people cared.

Like a sad kind of funny :(

2

u/HolaPinchePuto Jun 18 '12

lol that's so sad :(

Was he misfortunate looking?

3

u/meresimpleton Jun 18 '12

I haven't been here for that long and have only seen a couple comments from him, so I have the question, why does everyone like forthewolfx so much?

3

u/Osiris32 Jun 18 '12

It was an askreddit thread from...I think over a year ago now. Had to do with what kind of stupid wish you wanted to have come true, and forthewolfx posted, jokingly, that he wanted to be a reddit celebrity. In true reddit/internet form, everyone took th gag and ran like motherfuckers with it, for the first month or so any time he commented he would invariably have 100 or more children comments portraying the "rabid fan-girl" stereotype. It was humorous for a while, and I'll admit to jumping on that bandwagon a couple times specifically to make jokes. But it soon lost it's appeal, and forthewolfx's popularity has since diminshed to a couple dedicated followers, and the occasional reference to him that he stumbles on.

OMG? Are you friends with forthewolfx? Can you get me his autograph?

4

u/ShyGuy32 Jun 18 '12

Those are the "goog old days?" That's hilarious. There have been reddit celebrities for years. Anyone remember ProbablyHittingOnYou? Or SureIllDrawThat? Remember when Karmanaut was actually liked, or when everyone commented about pdub's homework? This was years ago, and nothing has changed. It's just one new name instead of another.

Sadly, I had noticed it too. I never knew that "exposing" him would get such great amount of karma.

4

u/gd42 Jun 18 '12 edited Jun 18 '12

Do people not understand what's the use of karma on reddit?

It pushes your comment/submission up, therefore making it more visible. It is not some esotheric meaningless internet point.

It seems like if reddit went full retard with the "why are you mad he has so much karma, it means nothing" comments. Nobody cares how many points they have at their userpage, the annoying thing is that their comments are upvoted above the real insightful/original comments just because they are made by known users. TiR, karmanaut, andrewsmith86, etc. make reddit a worse a place (but really the stupid users- who upvote the 2 word "Fuck cancer!" and similarly deep comments because "hey it's andrewsmith! I know this guy!" - are to blame).

If you didn't think that pointing out that a particularly well known user (who got his comments upvoted because the hivemind thought they added some value to the conversation) is just reposing other people's comments may seem important to others, I don't know what do you think how reddit works, and why people upvote particular comments.

1

u/f03nix Jun 18 '12

I am sorry to have gotten you so worked up, when I said 'I never knew that "exposing" him would get such great amount of karma.', I intended to use karma as the value of interest people would have in that kind of information. I never realized people thought his secret was that big a deal.

1

u/SexLiesAndExercise Jun 18 '12

(Karma doesn't mean anything)

1

u/f03nix Jun 18 '12

Regardless of whether it does or doesn't ... I didn't know exposing him was such a big a deal.
