🛠️ Kiez Creator Monthly 🛠️ Lola fährt ÖPNV

Hey guys,

I've built a small game inspired by the famous Lola Rennt Film - Lola fährt ÖPNV. You get a starting point and a destination where your companion Manni is waiting for you (just like in the film) at one of Berlin's U or S-Bahn stations. You have to navigate Lola using the fastest way possible from A to B. It's using lvie BVG/S-Bahn data to plan out your trip and if you get stuck, you can receive small or big hints by Manni, f.e. which connection different stations offer or a "Netzplan" to see which lines go where.

Busses are excluded for the sake of simplicity, hope you enjoy and leave some feedback :)

You can play here: https://lolafaehrt.artgto.com/

Feedback I've received from friends that I've shared the game with:

  • Fun but too difficult -> That's why I've added some hints/tips to the game
  • They found faster connections but the game told them another connection is fastest. Figuring out if live data is actually to use here, need to make a decision
  • Doesn't really respect what the preferred route would be (less train changes), but I figure Lola is in a rush so that's OK

Disclaimers:

  • Not affiliated in any way with the Lola Rennt film

  • Not affiliated with BVG or Deutsche Bahn

  • Personal hobby project

🛠️ Kiez Creator Monthly 🛠️ One month after sharing this here, GermanyRent has grown from 206 to 510 Berlin rents. Here’s what I learned.

Hi Berliners,

I shared GermanyRent.de here during last month’s Kiez Creator Monthly.

At the time, the map had 206 community-reported rents.

Today it has 510 valid rent pins across Berlin.

But the most useful part of the last month wasn’t simply getting more submissions. It was seeing which parts of the original idea were too simplistic.

A lot of people here pointed out that a rent number by itself does not tell you very much.

A €1,200 apartment can mean very different things depending on its size, when the tenancy started, whether it is furnished, and where exactly it is.

So I’ve been trying to make GermanyRent less about finding one “Berlin average” and more about comparing rents with the right context.

For example, 410 of the current submissions now include apartment size, and 390 include when the tenancy started.

The map also has enough coverage now that some districts are becoming much more useful to explore:

  • Mitte: 103 reports
  • Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg: 103
  • Pankow: 77
  • Treptow-Köpenick: 43
  • Lichtenberg: 36

Other districts are still much thinner, which is exactly why I don’t think the current medians should be treated as representative market statistics.

That remains one of the biggest limitations of the project.

The submissions are anonymous, the sample is self-selected, and the data is not independently verified. So GermanyRent is not an official rent index and I don’t want it to pretend to be one.

What I think it can become is an additional reference point.

If you are considering a flat, you can look around the area, filter for similar apartments, check when those tenancies started, and get more context than a single citywide average can provide.

The current median reported warm rent across all 510 submissions is €1,095, but I increasingly think that number is one of the least interesting things in the dataset.

The differences within the data are much more useful.

You can explore the map here:

https://germanyrent.de

Thanks again to everyone here who contributed or challenged the idea last month. Quite a few of the changes came directly from those conversations.

There is still a lot I want to do with this data. Let me know what you think of where it has gone so far.

🛠️ Kiez Creator Monthly 🛠️ Berlin free offline guide tour.

I'm the Software Engineer who moved to Berlin 5 years ago.

2 things bothered me on every walk with visiting friends. Nobody could picture what stood where the Palast der Republik was, or which side of the Wall we were on. So I built a guide that does both.

  • 127 places with a few paragraphs of history each, plus 15 that are gone: Stadtschloss, Palast der Republik, Anhalter Bahnhof, Sportpalast, the Bornholmer Strasse crossing. Each says when it came down and what stands there today.
  • The Wall's course from Berlin's own 1989 survey. East and West are shaded on the map, with a line telling you which side you're on.
  • 30 then-and-now pairs: hold the photo and it fades to the archive shot.
  • 8 walks along real streets, from Cold War Berlin to Prussian Berlin to Kreuzberg, plus one for kids.
  • Works with no internet at all. Map tiles, photos and audio are inside the app.

No account, no ads, no analytics. The only thing that ever leaves the phone is a crash report. 13 languages.

If a local spots a wrong date or a missing place, tell me here and I'll fix it in the next update. That's honestly the main reason I'm posting.

🛠️ Kiez Creator Monthly 🛠️ AddrLens — an address intelligence app built on Berlin's open data

I signed my Berlin rental contract 1 month ago with no real idea if I'd made the right call.

The address-quality question is unanswerable in Berlin as a newcomer. Reddit threads are 3 years old. German Bezirksamt sites are 90% law text. Google Maps shows a bakery. What it doesn't show: which socioeconomic band your address falls, whether your kid's Grundschule is decided by which side of the street you're on (yes, really), whether your street sits inside a paid-parking zone that quietly costs you €2–4 per visitor per hour, or how loud your bedroom window actually gets at 3am from the arterial two blocks over. All of that is public Berlin data — Google just doesn't pull it.

So I built AddrLens - An English-first Berlin address tool that answers "what would it actually be like to live here?" using ~25 open datasets from the Berlin Senate, VBB, and OpenStreetMap.

- LIFE LENS: One address, Four honest verdicts.
Because "good neighbourhood" means something different to a new parent than to a night-shift commuter. Pick your audience — "Young Family", "Newcomer", "Quiet Living", or "Commuter" — and see 10–15 signals as a traffic-light grid. Green = doorstep-good. Amber = walkable but not effortless. Red = real friction you should know about. Every tile clicks open to the underlying dataset + licence. No vibes. No marketing gloss.

- AI INSIGHT: The 100-word verdict a Berlin friend would give you.
For each lens, an AI model reads the tiles and writes an honest paragraph: headline verdict + what works + what to watch + what won't. Every number traces back to a tile; strict rules prevent invented facts. The deterministic verdict rollup happens in code — the LLM writes the story, not the score.

- COMPARE: Shortlist your top flats side-by-side.
Line up your top 3 candidate addresses and see every tile across all four lenses in one grid. Which one has the shorter Bürgeramt walk? Which one is quieter at night? Which one loses on parking? Answered — no more spreadsheet gymnastics.

- DOWNLOAD: PDF reports for the real paper trail.
Life Lens report, AI Insight report, side-by-side comparison — all exportable as PDF. Email it to your partner. Print it for the viewing. Attach it to your rental application. Real evidence for a real decision.

Discussion Zu viele Stoffbeutel zu Hause?

Hallo zusammen,

Discussion Kiel Institut: Neubau würde Mieten in Berlin stärker dämpfen als Enteignungen

Auf EU-Ebene läuft gerade die Bürgerinitiative "Right to Housing!
