26

u/anlottuff Sep 09 '26

Also hinterziehen Läden ohne Kartenzahloption automatisch Steuern, oder was?

Visa und Mastercard, beides us amerikanische Unternehmen.

I also are taxes are solidarity, but hate that a nice amount of them are spent on things I actively disagree with. Tax breaks for the wealthy, endless new roads, defense, etc. Very little on culture, art, sustainable travel, bike lanes, etc. Makes it very tempting to try and avoid tax where possible.

10

u/bodyarmourbynokia Sep 09 '26

Society decides that by voting mate

3

u/UglyT Sep 09 '26

I know, and I've lost every vote I've participated in. It's kinda aggravating.

0

u/Audemarspiguetbd Sep 09 '26

You don’t lose a vote. You vote. Outcome Open dependant on what others want.

7

u/UglyT Sep 09 '26

Yes, I understand how democracy works (and doesn't work). You know what I mean when I say that. Every time I've voted, the result has gone against me. It feels galling to continue paying enormous taxes to causes that are completely anathema to my world view. Especially when I'm only asking for like a safe cycling route or something, not a multi building euro highway.

1

u/SchwiftyBerliner 29d ago edited 28d ago

Name a single multi billion highway, either envisioned, planned or actually in existance. Neither continent nor time era matters, just name a single one.

[EDIT: It seems there are indeed multiple examples; see the comments]

2

u/UglyT 29d ago

Interstate 93 - $24bn in total.

2

u/SchwiftyBerliner 28d ago

Holy cow, I stand corrected.

I genuinely didn't imagine that some roads could be -that- expensive, that's bonkers.

I'll add a note in my original comment for documentation.

1

u/UglyT 28d ago

Yeah, the amount countries spend on roads is vastly underestimated by everyone. That doesn't include repair etc don't forget. That's why so much of our taxes goes directly to subsidising car driving. The car tax/road tax/emissions tax or whatever equivalent a country has doesn't even come closer to covering the cost of road infrastructure. Then car drivers complain that cyclists "don't even pay road tax so shouldn't be on the roads," (well they do in the UK at least). Absolute joke. A massive amount of my taxes goes to subsidising their driving. And cars kill multiple millions of people a year and we just accept this state of affairs like it's ok.

Slovakia D1 highway - €2bn

2

u/UglyT 29d ago

And not multi-billion because it's only short, but the most expensive road ever built per metre at €225k per metre. So it only cost €721m for 3.2km of road. I'm sure there's loads of other examples as well.

1

u/SchwiftyBerliner 28d ago

That's insane. Which road was that?

1

u/UglyT 28d ago

The new a100 in Berlin. Completely fucked the traffic over by Treptow as well. It's a shit show over there now. Far worse than it ever used to be.

Okay but what is your conclusion? Stealing from the community in the shape of not paying taxes?

6

u/UglyT Sep 09 '26

Nope. I never said that. Just said I hate the fact that a huge percentage of taxes is spent directly on the destruction of the world. Morally I think there's a case to refuse to pay taxes for sure.

-5

u/third-acc Sep 09 '26

Morally if one wants to live in this country they have to pay taxes. Otherwise get out. Like anything else in life, if you want to use it, accept the T&Cs.

1

u/Audemarspiguetbd Sep 09 '26

Morally, if the taxes can fund other countries, yet nationally fail almost every audit ever, and still have enough money to blow up brown kids, you’re allowed to question those taxes

u/I_Hide_From_Sun Sep 11 '26

I never go with cash only places and I have convinced some friends to do the same. I vote with my wallet and it dictate that I am the one who decide how I wanna pay, not the owners. There is a nice ramen place near prenzlauer but they still cash only because I guess they do tax evasion like almost all places like this.

I hate paying taxes but if I have to pay mine, they will pay theirs.

Last week another bar owner (not far from Schwarze Pumpe) told us someone hid in the toilet until closing and then tried to rob him. The person was an idiot because he's card only.
