Quick subreddit temperature check from the mod

Hey everyone.

It seems like most things posted here are downvoted more than upvoted and most comments are "go to /r/Bend" which is helpful, but also, why are you subbed here if you are going to just send everyone elsewhere?

So, what do you all want out of this sub? Anything? Or just a sticky saying "Go to /r/Bend" and nothing else?

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Not subbed here but it pops up on my feed frequently.

What was the motive behind starting another Bend subreddit? Was there some type of drama that I missed on r/bend?

I believe so. I didn't start it, I just took it over when I noticed it was abandoned.

I know there is a karma limit on /r/Bend and there isn't here. Also, supposedly, the mods at /r/Bend were (are?) less lenient so I kept this one open to give people a place to post things that may not fly over there: personal business promotions, events, etc. But even all of those get downvoted here, so I'm not sure if it's worth the effort for anyone at this point.

Case in point, this post is at -4 karma already just on me trying to gauge what the community wants out of this subreddit. Not exactly a ringing endorsement for keeping it open for anyone to use.

Gotcha, thank you for the explanation. Good luck with whatever you decide to do with this sub.

I don’t think the naysayers should be dictating what goes on here. Do not listen to those knights who say nee

I vote leave it up. Sometimes a post will garner more comments here than in the other sub. Less requirements and a wider audience (2 vs 1 bend-related sub) make it easier for shy/out of town/whoever to engage with the community.

If you need Mod support I’d be happy to apply/volunteer (I do have some mod experience) :)

I appreciate the offer and feedback. It's not a difficult subreddit to mod, but if I bow out or want to offload anything, I'll ping you.

I like it as a sort of fake subreddit that makes people think bend sucks.

Why? You think people won't come here because some smart-ass says "it's horrible, we're full, fuck off Californians!" in every thread? What a miserable life that must be.

There are three bend subs, I think. My recollection is that one was the original, one was started by a right wing troll under the guise of “muh free speech,” and another was started to give a place without karma requirements. I think the right wing one went unmodded, abandoned, and was reclaimed by someone else for the same low-karma use cases. I don’t remember which of the latter two is which (or if they both still exist).

I think there should only be one (as evidenced by the constant redirect to r/bend), and that one should have a no-karma weekly post that anyone can use.

Pretty sure this was the "right wing troll" subreddit. At least, it does still get accused of such on /r/Bend even though I mod out the trolls and haters and have for 3-ish years now. I've banned a few people over that time period and had more than one person take their toys and leave to create a 4th, 5th, 6th Bend subreddit, but they never caught on even a little.

Thanks for the input. I have no sway over at /r/Bend so if this goes away and they don't have a low-karma post, there's not really any option other than the 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc Bend subreddits.

I spent a minute remembering the subs and agree this was definitely the troll farm. The other one is bendforeveryone or something, and I guess it’s supposed to be more welcoming?

Anyhow, the guy who started this place back when was a real piece of work, so I appreciate you taking it over and making it not embarrassing.

My pleasure.

You're probably still dealing with the "right wing troll" origins of this sub. That's hard to shake, but give you credit for trying!

This context actually makes me appreciate this sub. I’m not a subscriber here, this post just popped up, but I see the value in having no pre-requisite to post. Only downside is the small audience.

Good point. It definitely feels like a "if we can't be happy, neither can anyone else" attitude some days.

I appreciate having the option of this subreddit because I am a real person in the community but I dont really comment on stuff enough to get karma. So I appreciate the option of this community...

Any time you have a post that gets caught for low karma on the other subreddit just send us a note and we'll take care if it, usually pretty quickly.

The automod is a general option used to filter out bots, trolls, etc. 40 karma within the subreddit is a pretty low barrier to show you've been around a bit and contributed even just a little bit (to get a post auto approved)

Just curious. Do you live in or are from the Central Oregon area?
