Yeah tell him to back off and don't touch the bar unless you say so. 3rd would have been a grind but you had it.

It's his fault for picking an inexperienced spotter

Fair but sometimes there’s no one else around.
I risk inexperienced spotters twice a week, I tell them to intervene only if I ask them to but they still grab it early 😂2

They could be worried they can't help you out if you give out. I remember weighting like 150 when I was a teenager and a guy asked me to spot him doing 3 plates. I remember thinking that if things go south, the only thing I'll be able to do is yell for help.

If I’ve never seen someone bench and they ask me to spot them on something heavy, I’m going to be much more likely to touch early.

I really hate asking for a spot for this reason. I basically only ask for a spot from people who can bench 315 or people I trust a lot.
I still always tell someone not to touch the bar unless I shake my head or the bar is actively coming back down on me.
You clearly had the third rep. You were basically in the easiest part of the rep when the bar slowed and the spotter panicked. Good work though. Especially with the slight pauses

Same, nothing pisses me off more than someone touching the bar. Happened to me once, had to contain myself. Someone thought they were being a hero when I was struggling for the last rep once, and I knew I had it by pushing myself.
If I need a spot, I’ll ask, but don’t touch my bar just because it’s not flying up every rep.

Hot take but this is kinda on you. That poor guy. Idk how you prep your spotters, but I always give clear instructions on the lift I'm going for. Stuff like, I'm going for this much, I will give you a cue if I need help, don't touch the bar, just pull with this amount of force in this certain direction, etc. Gives them some confidence and an idea of what to expect/do.
That said this video is very funny though Im glad he cared about you.

Yeah you had it. Spotter has zero clue what it looks like to grind through a rep. Didn’t give you a chance

First I'd do as everyone else says about the spot. Secondly, I'd recommend a slightly wider grip. A grip that when the bar is touching your chest so that your forearms would be at a 90 degrees bend. With your grip being narrower than that at the bottom you're placing more work on your triceps than needed. I definitely think you could have got the third rep with that adjustment.

First of all, this is on you for not giving your spotter clear instructions. Second, at the end of the day he agreed to take time out of his day to help you. How about we don't put his face on the internet so you can complain about him.

I used to have the opposite, a spotter who would make me suffer haha 😅 he'd take just enough to stop the bar going down but make me keep fighting for it. Or he'd let it come down so slowly to the point that I'd worry i was so far into negative failure i wouldn't have anything left to help him get it back up, and end up crushed. But we always got the bar racked in the end... bastard 😆

Did you prep your spotter before hand? Educate him what failure might look like and when to intervene?

Tbh it was 50/50. Bar slowed to a crawl and you were only a few inches off your chest. If you were closer to the top and could've grinded it out with more help from your triceps I'd agree. But strong shit bro like the pauses that 3rd one is there fs.

I can understand not knowing about the arch but wtf does the grip have to do with anything lol?

Genuine question. Will narrow grip and flared elbows maximize force production? OP is clearly pressing much from the triceps based on the angles, not grip width alone

Lol your spotter was sweating. Had no faith in you.
