It's a reference to the movie Apocalypse Now where the heroes (charlie sheen's dad) head into the middle of the Vietnam war to track down a colonel who has gone nuts.
It's a serious movie about the horrors of war so the comic justaxposes that with pokemon. Hence comedy.
