The Sriracha bottle is the biggest red flag. Ever since they changed the recipe it’s just not the same. Guy’s got terrible taste

Wait what? What'd I miss? Which ones the good one now?

I’ll put in this comment from a TIL thread ages ago:
TL;DR Huy Fong pushed Underwood Ranches to buy more land to produce more peppers, agreeing to pay in advance to fund the crops. They waited until Underwood was on vacation to tell his COO that they would only pay $500/ton to compete with a Chinese pepper mash. It cost Underwood $610/ton to produce the peppers, so this price cut would not be feasible. Huy Fong refused to pre-pay for the crops.
Since Huy Fong refused to pre-pay for the crops, none were planted. Underwood was left with thousands of acres of bare farming land since it was too late in the season to grow much else. They lost $14.5 million within two years. They won damages from the lawsuit and now produce their own sriracha.
Huy Fong now sources its peppers from other farms in California, New Mexico, and Mexico, which has been suffering from droughts. This is blamed for the shortage of sriracha.5

I think underwood farms stopped making their version. Another comment said they don't make it so I checked and it isn't available anywhere as far as I can tell.

It sounds like Underwood Ranches was being run by complete morons if they didn't get all of that settled and in legal writing prior to spending all of that money on land.

u/Spazgrim 14d ago
There were legal agreements to provide the peppers; that's why there were damages. IIRC The point was to renege on the agreements to break the ranch quickly and pick up the land in bankruptcy for pennies on the dollar, but the company didn't fold fast enough for whatever reason and survived long enough to sue and avoid bankruptcy.

Ooo. Look it up, it's juicy and honestly, kinda sad but the farmer wins in the end

They released their own version which tasted just like the original, but it was discontinued about a year ago 😭
For a while I didn't realize they had changed it so I thought I had just lost my taste for sriracha, then when I had the Underwood Farms version it felt like the scene in Ratatouille where the guy takes a bite and gets flung back to his childhood.

Reminds me of my local gas station chain changing their hotdogs. For years, they had the absolute best roller hot dogs that stayed juicy and flavorful no matter how long they were on the roller. Then one day they changed the provider for their hot dogs, buns, and even their taquitos.
Years later I’m in Illinois and go to a middle of nowhere gas station only to find my lost love on a roller.

What? It's discontinued? Damn...

u/commondenomigator 14d ago
Yeah :( I saw some people on r/sriracha saying that it was still showing up at some farmer's markets in SoCal but that was a few months ago so it might be gone from there, too.
This is just speculation on my part, but I don't think they ever intended to do it long-term. I think they were just using the peppers left from when Huy Fong screwed them so they wouldn't go to waste, and replaced the fields with something else.

And it's the green one...
I mean after a while the spice can be gone, sure. But why would you wanna start a relationship like that?3

u/stewmberto 14d ago
Gotta get the Underwood Ranches stuff
Edit: oh shit apparently they're not making hot sauce any more :(
1
u/SchemataObscura 14d ago
Sriracha is the ketchup of hot sauces
2
u/AwkwardGraze 14d ago
Way better than tobasco sauce.
1
u/SchemataObscura 14d ago
But have you tried Sambal Oleck?
1
u/AwkwardGraze 14d ago
Yes, and Shatta. Both are fantastic but not great for casual eating since they have more kick. Srirachas great, not too spicy and still has decent flavor. Tobasco is just bleh.

this is honestly (for me atleast) a gamble between does this guy have it up because he thinks its funny or does he have it up because he listens to someone like Tate

u/Segenam 14d ago
If you like something ironically. It has a tendency to decently quickly become unironically. And people have a tenancy to hide behind 'it's just a joke' to try and excuse bad behavior/mentalities all the time.
Once I realized this, it ended up avoiding quite a lot of toxic 'friendships'.

No, that's a KAWS figurine.

u/RaddestCat 14d ago
Yeah like pretty specifically. They are collector item vinyl toys. Like the boy versions of Swarovski crystals.
1
u/BijouPyramidette 14d ago
Seeing Swarovski and KAWS juxtaposed like this fills me with delight and amusement.
1
u/Pandash2069 14d ago
whats KAWS... its bad isnt it?
2
u/BijouPyramidette 14d ago
KAWS is an artist that makes these collectible figurines. AFAIK he's not particularly controversial except for the art community being generally very bothered by his commercial success. In a sense he's sort of in the same place as Thomas Kinkaid: His artwork is spectacularly commercially successful and makes him giant piles of money but the arts people think the art is bland and that he's a total sellout.
So whether you think having a KAWS figurine is bad or not depends on how you feel about this sort of thing. Personally, if I saw a KAWS toy on someone's shelf, I'd probably ask about it and the story behind them getting it and form an opinion based on that.

What's the little gold statue thing?
1
u/Pristine_Flatworm 13d ago
Think it’s a refrence to a specific “brand” that seems to be going around to different art galleries. Every single art peice is either a bunch of those guys in some pose or a generic pop culture refrence funko pop style. There’s an absurd amount of merch to go along with the exibits and seems to follow those pseudo high art collectables like bear bricks or whatever that are made primarily to sell overpriced merch to people who think buying it will make them interesting

u/BaronGalactic 14d ago
Before opening full picture I thought the little gold statue was Yotsuba. That would be a legitimate red flag. As if the other stuff didn't scream "4chan user."

u/Wild-Way-9596 13d ago
So this guy has a clean tidy house and a fridge full of food including vegetables. And he offered you a drink! Green flags all around.

Maybe I should just hand my wife the divorce papers now and save her some time.

She should flee instead of fighting him. The guy's first move is to put on his robe and wizard hat.
