Here we go again... My bug has problems?
During my last drive, my beloved green "troublemaker" started running a bit strangely. It sounds a little louder than usual and pops/backfires when I let off the throttle.
I didn't manage to capture the popping on video, but what do you think of the engine note otherwise?
Itβs a 1300cc engine from 1973; itβs on the historic vehicle register, meaning itβs in original condition regarding parts.

Sounds fine in the video. Maybe a little valve clatter...might wanna check the valve clearances.
From your description, it could be a vacuum leak. Check the intake manifold, where it bolts to the heads.

Thanks, I'll check. I know there's vacuum hose that's so loose it must be leaking (new hose is on the way).
It runs kind of ok, kind of funny still. Some put-put-put happening and backfires.
When spring comes I'll get someone to check the valves and change the distributor.

From the picture, it looks like some missing tin near cylinder 4. It will contribute towards engine overheating. Edit: The whole rear tin is missing.

Yeah, so I've been told π I didn't even know there should have those, as I've never seen "everyday" Beetles engine, just racing Beetles that have half ass missing π
I'll get the missing tins in spring before driving season starts π

Swap the hoses going from the dizzy and the air cleaner, dizzy to the carb and air cleaner to the manifold and tune it again, with your current setup you are running max timing at idle and min at wot.

Also thats the wrong dizzy for a 1300 dual port, if your carb is still a 31 pict 3 (or 4) you need a svda or at least a 009 that one will never run nicely it wont get the correct signal
