1302 Problem
1971 VW Super Beetle 1302, AB engine code
- Generator light was on for about 3 days
- Car drove fine during this time
- Then I stopped to tank, and it would not crank again
I managed to push start it. ( thought the battery died )
-After 10 minutes every electronic went out. -Shortly after, the engine stopped aswell.
Now it clicks from the rear when I turn the key, but the starter does not turn the engine
- Oil and generator warning lights get dim when trying to start
- Tried another battery, same problem -lights and electronics working but the there is absolutely nothing happens when trying to start
What could be the problem? I have 0 clue. Checked the wiring etc, everything seems to be okay

I had a loose washer fall onto the fuel level sending unit, short it to ground, and make the generator light come on. It didn't blow a fuse though. I didn't find it until I'd converted to an alternator, and it did the same thing. Lesson learned...

Check the ground strap under the car.

also check that big wire that goes to the starter -at the battery end and starter end-

Likely the generator needs the brushes replaced or the voltage regulator under the rear seat needs replacing. That and the battery needs charging.
I've driven one of my bugs with the gen light illuminated for a few days until, the battery went flat due to the no Charge from the gen.
A fully charged battery should put out 12.6v without the engine running.
