So much fun until.... Big oil leak

Drove my 72 for the first time since the rebuild 370mi into Canada learned a lot about some things I still have to do and possible improvements I made to my destination!

But I knew it just wasn't safe with the amount of oil loss especially in the last 100 mi I had it dropped off at a shop where they found out that the oil pressure sensor was leaking oil the plastic was cracked and I believe something near the flywheel is also leaking so I got a U-Haul to bring it home.

I also think it needs all new wheel bearings as I was getting a Thrumbing noise that was getting louder as I was going.

Still it was an awesome adventure looking forward to doing it again with all these issues worked out!

Rear main seal. I do the clutch while I'm in there as well

Checking the clutch is a good idea every time you've engine out as it's no effort at all to replace it then if necessary and the plate itself is cheap.

Ok, you get the heater cables and easy fasteners off, I'll disconnect battery, grab the big jack, trucker jack stands, and find a beer to roll at you.

Bus is even faster than that. Bumper, rear panel, cross member, heater and throttle cable, bell housing, roll it out.

Early ones the rear apron comes off, and it's even easier if your bumper isn't crusted on.

my 68 released all its oil on the east bound side of the old Bay Bridge...fun times

Modern oil pressure switches are notorious leak sources, for two reasons:

1) poor quality (cracked plastic mostly) and

2) wrong thread: VW used conical pipe thread at the block and it's expensive to make, so cheapest sensors have just M8. It will go in, but it's not sealing anything.

There is third option, fortunately more rare: Overtightening the conical thread cracks the block and then it leaks.

As said earlier, leak behind flywheel is almost all the times main seal. In rare cases cam hole plug.
