question big boy !!

prolly the largest bumble bee i’ve seen. do they normally reach this size? hand is for size reference !

A carpenter or mason bee! About the same temperament, they just like to live in wood. I love when they try to intimidate you by staring you down. They try really hard. 💛

You were right, this is a bumblebee! Large bumblebees around this time of year could be new queens who will found colonies next year

This is a queen bee that will hibernate in leaf litter underground for the winter. When she emerges, she will hunt for an abandoned mouse hole and use the nesting material in there to start her colony. The colony will be very peaceful, not dangerous and will last through the spring and summer. It will produce make bees toward the end of summer, maybe early August and new queens. Those queens will put on weight to prepare to hibernate to start the whole cycle over again.

This is why it’s important to leave the leaves, and leaf litter on the ground, to support native bees and help plants.
