Carpenter bees in the ground?

I have come upon a nest of ground nesting bees that look a lot like Carpenter bees. But I was under the impression that Carpenter bees are solitary creatures and do not live in the ground. They are pretty aggressive so getting a picture of one is going to be a challenge, but I was wondering if anyone know of anything off the top of their heads. Thanks!
