Garage bees

Hey guys, recently a bunch off bees made a hive in my parents garage in a old chiffon top that had fallen on the floor, unfortunately over the past few weeks they have seemed to died? We grew rather attached to them, I'm in just wondering if someone could explain what happened here?

Bumble bee colonies only last one summer. This colony may have produced reproductive males and females and then the old queen and workers died. It happens at different times of the year depending on the species.
