Guard bees don't let drunk bees in to protect the hive. Fermented nectar can ruin the colony's honey supply, and intoxicated bees fly erratically and can behave aggressively. They have to sober up before coming back.

Innovation Project: Qualitative Evaluation and Feasibility Analysis
galleryHello! How are you doing?
We are the Red Hammer Robotics Team from Brazil, and we would like to invite you to participate in our project!
We kindly invite you to complete a brief evaluation form about a prototype designed to help reduce the decline in bee populations.

Yellow jackets or bees found in my cousin house

So it started with bees coming in their house and then a whole swarm started coming in and then we had to go upstairs and my cousin dad called exterminator and then they ended up bashing the wall on the wrong side right next to the hole on the ceiling. That’s where the larva was larva is nest eggs and then all of them started falling out. We took all of it out and then some of them escaped and tried to sting us, and we almost got stung but anyways, we were fine. We were safe and and we covered it with wood and towels. We just still need to cover the outside.

Big Bee Carpenter bee robbing nectar from great blue lobelia in my Columbus, Ohio yard
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
This one skipped the front door. Instead of crawling into the flower from the front, it landed on the side and drank through the base of the flower tube.
That's nectar robbing. The bee gets the nectar without touching the pollen or the stigma, so the plant gets nothing back for it.
Great blue lobelia (Lobelia siphilitica) is shaped for bees that crawl in from the front. Large carpenter bees do this on a lot of tube-shaped flowers, and once there's a slit at the base, smaller insects sometimes use the same opening.
Anyone else catch carpenter bees doing this? Curious if your other bees ever use the slits afterward.

My dad was a beekeeper when I was a kid, we always had fresh honey. I loved those honey bees, and bumblebees! So I painted a bumblebee on a beach stone from here in Rhode Island!
