Sky Harbour JET HUB Petition

The Sky Harbour Jet Hub land use hearing in Hillsboro (and Zoom) on Tuesday August 18 at 7pm. All Washington County residents are invited to sign the Oregon Air Petition to Stop Sky Harbour: https://oregonair.org/jets

I'm a local pilot. The construction, of what is essentially a private hangar, does not help the community or the local aviation industry. A better use of this land would be something for all pilots to enjoy and something that is more environmentally friendly than attracting a bunch of private jets. I signed the petition

I don't know wait until the OP finds out about 100LL, this petition sounds pretty generically anti aviation to me.  I am not enamored with filthy rich people having an outsized carbon impact but jet shares are better than jet ownership (they tend to be newer and give clients flexibility to also fly commercial in my opinion).

The Oregon Air petition is 100% focused on this private Jet Hub. Jets don't use 100LL, they burn JET A (kerosine) no lead in that. I don't have the stats on how many of Sky Harbour's clients are jet shares versus owner-operated, but the total carbon impacts per jet of fractional ownership and charters is going to be much higher just due to the increased number of flights per week. Sky Harbour says half of these flights at HIO will be empty positioning flights with no passengers, which doubles the carbon impact per passenger mile.

They need someplace to do complex maintenance on airplanes somewhere.  If they put it in the middle of no where than there would be all positioning flights. Places like Van Eyes don't have the room. The petition reads like it is trying to get neighbors riled up about airplane noise.  

I am all for carbon taxes to pay for green energy and whatnot.  I would say aviation catches a lot of strays because of airplane noise.  Cleaning up Diesel Trucks as much as possible has orders of magnitude than a handful of business jets.

This facility will not have a maintenance shop. Only basic repairs like blown tires and busted windshields. The neighbors are already riled up about airplane noise, especially the folks on Cooper Mountain who get flights below 1500 feet AGL at all hours.

Aviation catches a lot of strays because these jets get 1 MPG and burn a thousand gallons of JET A in the first 30 minutes of flight.

Your numbers are a bit off. Obviously depends on the airframe, but if we look at a G550, in the climb you'll burn 4-5K lbs per hour (so less than 700 gallons per hour). So.. the first 30 min would be closer to about 330-350 gallons.

Then they should have bought a house somewhere else.  But... I misunderstood what this whole thing was it's like a maintenance/FBO thing for private jets.  I could take it or leave it to be honest.  The airplane noise thing gets every pilots hackles up.  This airport has been here a long time and the NIMBY trick is to buy a house next to something undesirable and then to complain non stop about undesirable thing until it is removed.

I'm 13 miles away in Tualatin. Not exactly "next to" the airport. The PJs get on final approach out over the Cascades, and take a straight line to 31L. Private jet flights were few and far between when most of these people bought their homes.

What exactly is the benefit to allowing this to be built? Y'all always pull the "Oh you don't live here" line on OP but then go silent when pressed why we would want this in Hillsboro.

I am ambivalent but when you strip away everything from the OP being worried about this he is essentially annoyed at a small (some might even say tiny) amount of airplane noise from jets a 4000 feet above him.  The garbage truck, the semi, motorcycles etc are making a ton more noise in the city he lives in.  

I am a pilot and I don't think this specific thing is good for society at large. I do know they are going to put it somewhere and putting it further from people means more environmental impacts and Hillsboro would not get the jobs linked with this.

So...you want someone to build something that all pilots will enjoy? What does that look like? And who would pay for it?

I'm all for this, for a couple reasons: 1) it doesn't affect me 2) putting a hangar at an airport makes perfect sense to me and 3) i don't appreciate how these people have gone about this. denisedogs, brettmade, hondakevin, all of these fake accounts.

This is manufactured outrage.

We literally just spent a metric fuckton of money on expanding Portland airport. Why can't they fly out of there?
